My charger light won’t go to green when plugged in for 2 days. If it is only connected to the battery it is green. Fished two days for about 10hrs and the unit worked fine. Two years old and stored inside and charged. Will leaving it plugged in hurt my battery?

Join the club! Mine has done that for a year, seems to charge just fine. Marcum told me it “should be ok”. I think they know their chargers are junk.
December 20, 2013 at 1:51 pm #1373115My chargers for both my VX1 & LX7 have done the same thing since day one. They seem to charge just fine however.
December 20, 2013 at 1:58 pm #1373116Not all batteries sold are actually new or stored charged FYI, so a purchased battery could actually already be in poor shape. I think there is a manufactured date on the batteries for future reference when buying.
Old batteries it takes a lot longer for the light to turn from red to green. On some really bad batteries i’ve had it take 3 days. When it takes more than 12hrs i toss the battery and it’s just not worth carrying around the weight for a 1/2 good battery.
All i’m saying is that the light not turning green can be a good indicator of a bad battery. A bad battery can run a vex for a while too, but nothing like a fresh/good battery will.

I left it on the charger and in two day worth of time it got very warm. My whole lx9 bag and the battery got really warm almost hot to the touch. Anyways I got a new charger from them too and did not work so I just bought a new battery. Works fine now…I think if it can’t get the battery to a certin percentage it won’t turn green..try a new battery with your charger….Im not too suprise about their battery…charger thing…been seeing a few post about it…
December 20, 2013 at 2:25 pm #1373132Marcum chargers do not have a float, so yes leaving it hooked up will roast your battery. Take it off now, 2 days might have already weakened it!
Go buy yourself a battery tender jr 12v charger. It has 3 stage charging and a float where it conditions and keeps your battery topped off. They are on amazon for less than $30.
December 20, 2013 at 2:39 pm #1373135My 7 I keep plugged in when not in use during ice season 3rd season still on original battery and just checked and both are cool to the touch. Neither of mine have ever turned green and no battery problems…
December 20, 2013 at 2:59 pm #1373144I had the same issue. I bought one from fleet farm with the gator clips. IT is a little higher quality. Just stinks having to remove the wires each time.
December 20, 2013 at 3:06 pm #1373145A quick check with a voltmeter is all it takes-when it’s above 12.7 your good…
$6 at Menards….The manual says not to leave the charger on full time..

I’m going to make a post right now on how to fix that issue. It will be in the Ice Fishing section as well.
December 20, 2013 at 5:27 pm #1373170So can someone confirm that when the Marcum charger light turns green the charger does not change or stop its charge rate? I assume that it simply detects a certain voltage and changes color which is why I worried about how long it was plugged in. My understanding is that battery tenders cut or reduce their output once a certain voltage is reached which is why you can just leave them on. I use that in my garage and it works slick. I think you can wire them in series too.
Sorry to repost this topic – I looked back far enough and saw that it was asked not too long ago. Hard to search on my phone…
December 20, 2013 at 5:30 pm #1373171DCS does I believe, otherwise no. They just turn green but do not turn off. Just for anyone who doesn’t want to search
tenchiPosts: 57December 20, 2013 at 11:12 pm #1373209$1199.00 for a lx 9 not even a year and I have to replace a charger and a battery…I have bad luck with Marcum charger and battery. My 825 sd camera battery died on me too…

x2, I’ve rigged all my portable electronics to charge using a Battery Tender brand battery charger. It charges, floats, and maintaines. I have motorcycle batteries that are over 10 years old that are still alive because of those chargers.
December 21, 2013 at 12:20 pm #1373252x3 on the Battery Tender Chargers, got mine off Amazon as well. It’s the best thing for the buck when I comes to taking care of your electronics batteries!
December 21, 2013 at 4:36 pm #1373273Agree totally on the battery maintainer !!! But this is from the Marcum LX7 manual. I leave both of our LX7’s plugged in and some days the light will have gone from Green to Red then back to Green.
haven’t ever had any battery problems YET (knock on wood).red light will change to green. Depending on the condition of your battery, this
process can take up to 20 hours to complete. At this time, you can disconnect
the charger from the battery and wall outlet. However, no harm will come to
your battery if you leave it attached to the charger.December 21, 2013 at 4:54 pm #1373277Marcum has/had 4 different chargers that I know of, maybe more.
Old DCS (had a float)
Old basic alligator style with no LED (no float, basic $10 charger)
New basic alligator style with LED (no float)
New style with a plug-in and LED (no float)I don’t know which of these, if any, the Lx-7 currently uses.
Marcum12Posts: 102December 22, 2013 at 2:54 am #1373303I’ve been having the same problem. Had mine on charger never turned green. Got a tip to unplug it for a few minutes then plug it back in and it should turn green after awhile, which mine did. My voltage meter on the 7 reads HI-V so I know it is charging. Marcum did send me a new charger that did not turn green when I used it. I fished yesterday and it is plugged in now so I will have to see if it is green when I get home from work.
