This morning I took my Girlfriend out ice fishing for her first time – she had never even been out on the ice!! Well, somehow I managed to wake her up at 5:30am to catch the early bite and we managed to make it out to the lake, gear and all without any surprises…
50yds of hidden slush under a thin surface crust divided us from my favorite spot on the lake after .2 miles of hiking through the thick stuff. Needless to say, the look on her face as the top layer of ice broke under our feet was priceless!!!
On top of the ice remains 4-10″ of slush and broken, water filled footprints from our trek to and from our fishing hole…
I was a bit worried when I remembered that this was her first time out on the ice and that it had probably frightened the hell out of her ( hahahaha ), but her first couple fish through the hole complimented everything quite well.
For being a first timer, avoiding the cold all this time, refusing to touch fish and disgusted with how the minnow heads were pinched off, she managed to land a 2.5/3lb largemouth. The light action rod accompanied with 3 lb fluorocarbon was bent in half as the first timer frantically reeled the catch upwards. The ride home was nothing but smiles as we left the lake after an eventful thursday morning.
Success…..
