I don’t know if this has been discussed before.
But has anyone used their side image sonars on the ice to find structure. and is it worth pulling it off the boat?

I found the best results from Side scan when you are moving, I think that is why most will not use in the winter.

I know someone posted on here yesterday of a hummingbird 360 mounted onto a wheeler. great idea but with my side imaging I am with Calvin that it works way better when moving.

Best way to find structure on the ice is to already have a waypoint with a screencapture of the structure.

Did it yesterday. Resulted in a nearly 50 walleye afternoon….But, the vast majority were less than 10″ long lol.

Jason Halfen has ben doing exactly this for years using his 1198. Kind of a hassle but he mounts the transducer on the end of a stick and turns it while under the ice, it looks the same as 360 except no distance range…. It works.

I have used my 798 in the past by mounting it on a stick and spinning it just below the ice and it works ok to find structure. I found that it was best to only read out one side and spin the transducer slow. If you have a 360 that does work really well through the ice to help find structure. But you have to watch it to make sure it dosnt freeze up.

I wonder who is going to be the first to develop 360 / side image for the ice fishing community.
