As I sit here after my knee scope on Monday I can’t help but go over all the ice tactics and locations I plan to hit (this weekend?)

here is a tip I thought was most definitely worth sharing..

One thing I would like to bring up about fishing horizontal jigs with plastic or live bait is to thread up the add as level/plumb and square as possible. The reason why is….. if your jigging your bait and it spins out while in any kind of pause mode there isn’t a fish that will hit it… a quick check at the hole will tell you if your offering is spinning..

So fine tune your thread up skills and keep your bait from spinning out and you will ice more fish !!

The main reason I bought an “in-line” reel. A spinning jig will turn more panfish away than you could imagine.

Esp. big gills. Thanks for the tip, and you’re right-on Dave. This is a big deal when on a finicky gill bite!

Been using those real tiny Spro barrel swivels and a 20″ leader. I did a before and after with an underwater camera and the barrel swivel improved a deep water gill bite.

    Great Idea poorboy !!!

As much of the twist while fishing deep water panfish comes from the bait on the fall..

What size are you using ?

I believe they are the Spro size #1. They are the smallest ones they make and are a b!tch to tie with 2lb line. I personally don’t care for the inline reels.

I have been using the invisaswivel clear fluorocarbon swivel the past few years and it has worked as well as any other swivel I’ve used. I like that it is clear and neutrally buoyant.

Here’s a pic of the swivel. Like I said I am not sure of the actual size on the package.

I also use Cabela’s live bait #12 swivels, small & short, yet hold up icing.

You mean size 10. They are sized like hooks, bigger number = smaller size.

    #10 is a 35lb swivel
    #1 is a 330lb swivel

Why are you using a red swivel which will possibly draw fish away from your jig. I want fish after my jig not my swivel, especially when they are neutral or non aggressive in mood!

I found swivels work well on bigger, heavier baits…But i’m always twitching or jigging those anyway, rarely stopped motionless allowing it to spin. When i am using a tiny jig, i just use a straight line reel as there is NO twisting in comparison to a spinning reel.

When i did use swivels, it was the smallest spro that i could find. Spro is the only brand of swivels that i use, and have used all sized. I won’t buy anyone elses but theirs for my catfish/sturgeon tackle.
