This past summer when the IDO staff and I participated in the Scatter Rap Challenge I had the chance to stay at Sunset Lodge http://www.sunsetlodgeresort.com/ and meet one of the owners, Mitch Miller. The lodge was amazing as it had been completely rebuilt after the recent purchase by Mitch and his ownership team. Mitch was very, very helpful with fishing info which invariably included talk of a hot early ice walleye bite in the “Golden Triangle.”

Golden Triangle you say? Never heard of it. Tell me more!!

Mitch responded with a “you draw a line from here over to there and complete the triangle by using the resort located on Oak Island as the third corner.”

Of course he lost me at “you draw a line….”

Long story short it is the area up in the NW Angle north of Garden Island. And my email inbox is STUFFED full of photos and videos from the past few days of fish caught from that area.

    Me? Excited? Oh yeah!

Cal and I will run snowmobiles up from the south shore along the trail that the snowmobile club just completed staking earlier in the week. Fishing report(s) will follow if the fish gods smile on us.

Good luck James. I’m sitting at River Bend resort right now trying to get the courage to go outside and get the snomobile started.

We made it in safe and sound following the snowmobile run up from the south shore. With a little luck I should be able to share a ffew updates from the ice tomorrow. Tonight the guys are in the mood to kill off a pizza and a few beers in the Sunset lodge.

Updates from the ice proved problematic. We’ll call it a frustrating combo of cold hands and limited reception and leave it at that.

As for the fishing… things started VERY slow yesterday but improved as the day went on. Conditions were also pretty tough in the AM with high winds and blowing snow making everything a bit tougher than it should be. The winds died off by midday and the temps started to bump up to the point where we could move around a bit easier and the fish started to cooperate.

We fished 4 Blocks and Rabbit Ears, primarily. The best depths were 19′ – 23′ with the fish moving shallower later in the day.

The best baits were a Rattle Spoon in Green UV or a Tumbler in Green UV. Basically that Green UV color was hot and any bait we used in that color pattern got bit.

Our best bite happened from 4PM until dark on Rabbit Ears. My best fish was a 25″ walleye. Both Cal and I had fast action on 16″ – 18″ fish until the sun dropped completely below the horizon.

This morning temps are a balmy 13 degrees but the winds are brutal. Looks like we’ll be spending much of the day in the Otters on Day #2.
