Do I need current registration on my ice fishing sled? Never going to see a trail or road ditch literally trailer it to lake and unload and out fishing? Any know? TIA

Their rules state you need a state trail registration to operate on “state aid trails” the lake is not a trail. The fee is 78$ but I can get a 48$ permit but then I can’t ride on state aid trails. Seem like a loop hole to me.

“New in 2013: two options for snowmobile registration
A snowmobile may now be registered for trail use or non-trail use.
The trail use registration fee is $78.50 for 3 years and includes unlimited use of Minnesota’s 22,000 miles of state and grant-in-aid trails.
The non-trail use registration fee is $48.50 for 3 years and is not transferable. A snowmobile that is registered for non-trail use may NOT be operated on a state or grant-in-aid trail including a grant-in-aid trail in a road right-of-way.
A non-trail use registration requires a new registration number to be affixed to the snowmobile.
A state trail sticker is not valid for use on a non-trail use registered snowmobile.
If an individual wants to use a non-trail use registered snowmobile on a state or grant-in-aid trail, the snowmobile will need to be re-registered for trail use and a new registration number will be assigned.
A non-trail use registration decal will be yellow in color.

A lot of trails go across lakes, for $10 a year I wouldn’t chance it.

Its a 1990 sled that probably is barely worth 78$

I was given an early 80’s sled that didn’t run. I got it running and went to get it registered. When I found out the amount I left and told my kids it can’t leave the yard.

I was surprised this year that when I registered my snowmobile including the trail use, that there was no trail sticker to be attached as in prior years. I had my wife go back to purchase the trail sticker thinking I had somehow made a mistake and found out that it was registered for trail use and there was not a separate sticker. In looking at the tag, it looks a lot like the prior one…

Anyone know how one distinguishes the trail vs non-trail registration sticker?

as it states in the post above the non trail sticker will be yellow? I’m not sure other than that. I am going in there today after I talk with the local DNR about this lack of rules and loop holes.

Just spoke with DNR they said I only need a non trail use permit to use on private property AND LAKES I can not however take it on a trail but can go in road ditches.Seems like a bunch of BS to me. Once my xled hits 25 years old its a colletor and cost 9.50 and never expires….. one year away

Thanks… I missed the yellow color reference.

1 year away! You have it made… I have to wait another 10 years!

So how do out of state registered sleds get licensed to drive on MN state aid trails?

I think they have to buy a MN trail permit sticker. I remember having to buy one in Michigan in the past when I still owned a snowmobile.

You could register it as a collectors sled for $9.50 which would be good for as long as you own the sled. Then you would just have to pay for the trail sticker every year.
