Spent some time out crappie fishing early ice last Thursday and hooked into a fish/surprise of a life time. This monster 29″ 10.23lb walleye was caught on a small #14 hooked jig tipped with a plastic on 4lb line with a light action rod and pulled through a 6″ hole. Truly a metro monster.

Congrats! I love stories of people catching a big surprise fish on small gear. Talk about sporting!

Very Nice, doesn’t get much better than a 10+ eye through the ice.

Was it on a private lake?

Awesome! Why not timber? Jason Mitchell is always catching them out of timber all the time on Devil’s Lake. Maybe not the winter pattern though. What do I know? I’ve only caught 3 dink eyes ever on hard water.

Fishing deep, shallow, weeds, or other structure? I ask because we have seen some eyes come into the shallow back bays the last couple years. Primarily crappie/sunnie spots are producing eyes. No current, shallow water.
