Tonneau cover & Truck toppers

Had both and now all my trucks get toppers main reason was I couldn’t stand ice buckets upright with tonneau cover closed. Pretty minor I know, plus I like the looks with the new style toppers that are on trucks today.
December 9, 2013 at 5:25 pm #1370068I have both, soft tonneau for summer when I’m pulling the boat, and topper for winter when icefishing.
December 9, 2013 at 5:25 pm #1370069I am also looking to replace the back hinged window with the twisting handle locks. need the glass sheet and the handles. if anyone has any helpful tips for us both they are much appreciated.
December 9, 2013 at 5:31 pm #1370072I’ve had 6 trucks. 1 with no topper or cover, 4 with toppers. These 5 were used trucks that came with or without toppers. This year I got a new truck and decided to try a Tonneau cover. So far I really like it, I can roll it up and use my truck in ways I couldn’t with the toppers. Now with ice fishing here, I might be wishing I had a topper if I try to haul other peoples gear( my own gear no problem). I also have a short box. Other than that, I’m happy with the tonneau. It’s a Truxedo, a lot cheaper that a topper too.
hunter1723Posts: 349December 9, 2013 at 5:41 pm #1370076ARE Fiber Glass Topper looks really sharp and you can get the locks to be automatic locking with your truck so it works with your key phob.
December 9, 2013 at 5:44 pm #1370077Tonneau cover looks better. Topper is more useful but cost a LOT more and will reduce your gas mileage by almost 2 MPG. I prefer topper.

Looks are relative, some people may say you look better than I do….but we both know they would be wrong.
I’m a topper guy with contractor side windows.

Topper with contractor windows by a mile.
X2. Go with a Leer or ARE fiberglass topper. Contractor windows on the side. Interior light. You’ll be happy.
December 9, 2013 at 6:26 pm #1370088I went through this process a year ago. After looking at the top 3 manufacturers, ARE rose to the top. Great product. I’ve never had a regret with it.

I would kind of agree. I like the fiberglass toppers that fit the truck. Those look sleek and sexy. The aluminum toppers work great but look very industrial.
I used to think tonneau covers looked better till I had one. I just felt so limited in what I could carry and protect. I felt it was a mistake for me to go without a topper.

I own a truxedo and love it !!!
But I am leaning towards this way of covering as well !!
December 9, 2013 at 7:34 pm #1370123I have had both and will never own another truck without a topper. I liked the Access cover on my previous truck when I was just driving around but when it came to going camping, ice fishing or hunting I was always wishing I had a topper.
I have a Leer with side doors and love it….and it looks really great on the truck.
Having an almost 5 yr old now every time we go somewhere it seems like we have enough stuff for a month so having a topper is great for all the stuff and to keep everything dry.
December 9, 2013 at 7:37 pm #1370126Topper all the way!! Only negative side I have found to a topper is the guys saying “we should take your rig cuz you can haul more and lock it at the hotel.” Will never own a truck without a topper.
December 9, 2013 at 7:39 pm #1370127I won’t own another truck without a topper. Absolutely love mine!
NoFishPosts: 45December 9, 2013 at 8:06 pm #1370136A lot depends on HOW you use a truck, not just what you use it for. My dad had a full cap on all his trucks and my first one has a tonneau.
Yes, you can keep more ice gear out of the elements with a full cap. Many flip over shacks won’t fit under a tonneau. That said, you pay for that space with added difficulty in reaching things in certain parts of the bed.
My shack fits under a tonneau, and I like the ability to roll it back and have a normal pickup. Still, a lot of people will never give up a full cap. Your call.
December 9, 2013 at 10:03 pm #1370169All toppers for my trucks! Just a little suggestion. Stay AWAY from JASON toppers. I have one, have had numerous problems with it and they will NOT stand behind their own product!! I talked with the President’s son the very first time I called. He told me that he didn’t have the time to talk with me and listen to my problems. Then the LOSER had the audacity to hang up on me!! Nice company, NOT!!!!

I too made the mistake of buying a Jason instead of the ARE or Leer that I preferred as the Jason was local. Never again. It took at least two months of very determined calling, almost daily, on my part to encourage them to replace a failed windoor that should have been a simply warranty replacement.
December 11, 2013 at 4:08 pm #1370742I got the Extang solid fold on my gmc. really like it. seals up good had a little water leak in but it was like a monsoon outside. no drilling required. took me longer to take it out of the box then it did to put the cover on. looks good too.
December 11, 2013 at 6:28 pm #1370782I have a soft rolling cover because I want the functionality of a truck (loads of mulch, truck camper, atv, etc.). I have had an Access cover for 7 years and love it. It is slightly priceyer than truxedo but better quality in my opinion. It is secure inasmuch as someone doesn’t cut through it provided you have a locking tailgate.
December 11, 2013 at 8:09 pm #1370829I’ve had my ARE for 3 years and couldn’t be happier. Had tonneau cover before and would never go back. The cows loved it also could see there reflection in the truck.
Boss HawgInactiveBrainerd Lakes AreaPosts: 278December 12, 2013 at 7:16 am #1370900When my Velcro quit sticking on my Access cover I called them and they sent me new rolls for FREE. They have a lifetime warranty for the original buyer. The top was a little less sticky than should be but worked. They sold me a new sheet of vinyl with new Velcro for $60! I’m their customer for life.
December 12, 2013 at 7:37 am #1370903Got a roll up cover on my new truck this summer. That is going to suck for ice fishing this winter. Thinking I need to by myself a topper for xmas.
December 12, 2013 at 7:55 am #1370910Any recommendations on where to start looking fo one in the north metro?
Thanks,
December 13, 2013 at 5:51 pm #1371216Im going through the same debate right now…Use my truck for to many things…topper would be great but so would a tonneau some day…
hunter1723Posts: 349December 14, 2013 at 12:40 pm #1371309Mike find out where they sell ARE’s and then make sure you get the electronic lock installed on the back as well. You won’t regret it!
