I’ve been reading that purging is a somewhat complicated thing. The guy at the station says he just puts a little gas in a new tank then tips it over and drains it out. Does that work or should I wait till the gas company opens. They are 40#’s so I can’t just exchange them.

    yes it works

that is how you purge it – r you filling a 40 lb’er yourself?

I have a propane company do mine and just ask them to purge if it is a tank that I do not know for sure how long it has been since propane in it or if some other use was used for it — like being used as a air tank

air makes mositure and a little water will get in tanks

this is why needed to purge 1st

    hope this helps

Go to a place where they do it right. Don’t want the moisture in there freezing them up this weekend. I had that happen once when new tank wasn’t purged.

Purging is just to equalize the pressure, open the valve and let out whatever is left over in the tank from when they made it and it will be fine. If you do a google search you can find the science behind it but overall it doesn’t matter. It has more to do with the pressure inside the tank than anything, I just open the valve to make sure there is no pressure before filling.
