A video of the action can be seen HERE

We spent a lot of time on the ice this weekend in Colorado. I brought my girlfriend and buddy, Alex, out for their first time in a while. They had a blast with the consistent action of Rainbows and some Brookies. I had a blast being able to teach Kerri and Alex how to use/read a flasher, how to change your presentation in front of a fish, how to bait the hooks, how to use a Jaw Jacker, and how to identify different species of trout.

They didn’t like spoons, larger lures, or aggressive jigging but if you presented them with a small tungsten jig with a short wiggle, they found it very hard to refuse! Of all the trout we caught, none of them were over 14-inches but it was still a great time on the ice and we were surrounded by beautiful scenery.

We kept 2 limits of 12-13″ to enjoy around the campfire that night. There is a lot of mouths to feed in that lake!

Man, I was in Denver last weekend and really thought of hitting someplace. Had to be the dutiful dad though and party with the family. It would have been fun somewhere else in the country for once. Nice looking fish for sure.

That looks like a blast and you got to love that humminbird.

I’ll send you a few pics of my little bit of heaven for a trout lake once it finally gets froze. It’s not a mountain pond but a nice pot hole to relax and catch some awesome trout threw the ice.

I’ve used high mountain brine, the wild trout one and smoked them at 225-265 till they get 180deg internal temp with alder wood and they are great

I never caught a trout the ice in MN, I always planned on hitting opener at a small lake but never did. And it would get pounded that opening weekend and most of the fish would get taken.

You will have to come to Ely sometime then. There are many stream trout lakes in the area with trout averaging 14-15″ and they bite all season long!
