He now realizes he was being an idiot… instead of attacking him lets just be thankful no one got hurt. If a dog is all that was lost, i say it comes out as a win.

Honestly I am more upset about somebody drowning an old lab due to pure negligence than I am about the driver but that’s just me.

X2. The dog had no choice in the matter.

Its one thing for a vehicle to break the ice in the middle of winter. It’s another thing for someone to be an idiot and drive his vehicle on the ice this time of year. I don’t care how thick the ice is.

All he lost was his DOG!!! What kind of a statement is that? Maybe next time it will only be his son. Any loss of life because of stupid judgment is a crime.

While i understand the frustration, saying the dog is more important than him making out is a little insensitive. That is someones family that escaped a tragedy, even if he should not have been out on the ice yet.

No one said the dogs life was more important. The guy is still a grade A idiot.

Never ceases to amaze me… Speaking from experience I like to be one of the first ones out walking when I can check every step with a spud bar but count me as one of the last ones driving out even with an ATV when vehicle noise covers up any warning signs you might hear when walking. There are plenty of places to fish within walking distance of shore.

I would bet his entire family thinks he’s an idiot. I know mine would.

Just hope it’s lesson learned for him.

I’m thinking I would rather have drown then go home to tell the family I went out on the ice this time of year and our dog drown.

Slightly tongue in cheek, but you get my point.

I fished Leaf Lake in Becker County last Saturday (11/30) morning and the ice thickness was 8-9″. Why anyone would drive a pickup on the ice in Becker County is foolish. Tragic about the dog…. innocent victim.

Sad, A pet is a family member, like stated before… what if it was a child or another family member. Just makes you think how early this guy was out on the ice too.

Last year I drove out on a small lake at the end of December or start of January. There were other vehicles on the ice. I punched my first hole and found only 12″ of ice. Fishing on a windy day with a high in the upper 30s, I dang near went and parked the truck on shore.

Be careful what you wish for. You may be the next one with the plates, for a lot of different reasons. ‘Nice'(tongue in cheek), to see the underwhelming abundance of compassion for the guy, in this thread. Folks who live in glass houses, shouldn’t be throwing stones. Just sayin’.

I would fully support animal cruelty charges against the driver. Public money well spent IMO.

Criticizing an IMBECILE for driving a truck onto a lake on Dec 1 is hardly living in a glass house whilst throwing stones.

As far as compassion – Nope – not from me. The fellow is a full blown idiot, and his family is damned lucky he is alive….. My only compassion here is for the dog and for his family for having such a complete idiotic fool in their midst.

Judgmental? I say no, just observant, as it was this guy and this guy alone put himself on the front page and removed all doubt about his incompetent and asinine judgment. He put other lives at risk due to his bafoonary.

    Also just sayin…..

I’ll have compassion for him if the story comes back where the ice was 12″ thick and there were a bunch of other vehicles on the ice, but no snow roads.

Until that time, I am going to make a educated guess and every time I crunch the numbers it comes back the same, this guy is an idiot!

It doesn’t matter what the circumstances are. If you put your vehicle through ice you are an IDIOT. That’s the minimum price we all pay. Not saying you are always an idiot but in regards to that particular offense the label fits.

No doubt poor judgement was used. But I don’t believe any of us are walking around with the holes in our hands or feet to prove we are perfect. For all any of know this guy is really beating himself up over the loss of his companion. He had the dog with, didn’t leave it at home so I would venture to guess he was close to it. At one point or another we all have used poor judgement maybe not to this extent but poor just the same. Those that know me know I am critical about ice safety. I guess I have to wonder is how many that are pointing fingers at this have went out of there way to stop something like this from happening. I am not judging anyone here ( not my job) just asking all to take a good hard look at themselves. God Bless safe travel and tight lines.
