I was just curious to see what others use when walleyes can be tricky. I’ve heard of guys using sunfish jigs with spikes?

So what do you guys use?

Sometimes a bare hook and minnow, other times a jig to pin the minnow in one place. Sometimes a small minnow and sometimes a large shiner or rainbow. Let the fish order off of the whole menu. My go-to though is a plain hook and about a 3″ shiner.

There are a few ways to look at this, like others have mentioned small jigs with a few spikes work. I have also had good luck on a finicky bite using big baits like a jigging rap with a few spikes or minnow head hanging of the back hook. Large aggressive jigging strokes to pull fish in. When they come in and want to leave like other finicky fish, use small very suble jigging motion to keep them focused and mix in a large rip. I have had alot of fish grab on right during the sharp rip. The fish come in to eat but are turned off like you are stating. The large rip must convey something like “o crap this easy meal is getting away”. This has worked good for me in the past, I also like to fish two holes even if I am hopping around. My large lure such as a rapala jigging rap or the Tingler from VMC acts as an attractant, and I will sometimes have my TUC noodle sitting there as a deadstick with a small jig and spikes on. Hope this helps some, – QB

For the toughest of bites, I’m a fan of a small wire gold hook and a shiner, split shot 3 or 4 inches from the hook. Then again, I’ve had that presentation shunned fairly often too.
