It’s that time of year again…. What is everybody using for deep water light tackle pan fish line? I keep switching every year. I don’t like the stretch of mono, don’t like the memory of fluorocarbon and don’t like the icing up that comes with braid. What’s the answer? Thanks in advance

I tied on some suffix ice braid today. I too hate the stretch of mono in deeper water. It seemed a little stiff but I was using 8lb test, maybe the 2 lb would be a little more limp. Anyways, I think its probably worth a shot if your looking for a no stretch line
December 1, 2013 at 8:48 pm #1367967i got a spool of the Sufix 832 ice braid and to say I was disappointed in it would be an understatement. Yesterday I was out of the shack almost all day and the rod that had the ice 832 froze up way worse than the rods that had regular 832. I just wish they would make the regular 832 in smaller than 6lb, small ice jigs couldn’t quite pull it all the way taunt.
That being said for deep water panfish I would probably run either power pro or fireline crystal 4lbs to a 2lbs floro leader.
December 1, 2013 at 10:23 pm #1367980I have had great luck with the ice braid, but for panfish I run mono leaders usually ice majig ic 2lb or 4lb. I also know that the rod can make alot of difference, the QT from TUC and precision bury the hooksets home in deep water. – QB
December 2, 2013 at 3:29 am #1367996I rarely get deeper then 20 FOW so running a 2-3# mono has hot been a problem. Generally my deeper water I will use a longer rod to take up more line. That being said this year I have spooled up 4# Fireline Fused Crystal for deep water applications.
NoFishPosts: 45December 2, 2013 at 6:25 am #1368011Both the mono and braid have their issues. I personally don’t fish flouro except as a leader. There is no right answer. I like to keep rods with each so I can adjust to conditions. If you fish outside a lot, then I would think the stretch would be easier to live with than frozen guides and the like, but on the flip side of you fish mostly deep from a shack, the braid is where it’s at.
December 2, 2013 at 8:48 am #1368051Gamma ESP Ice, available as light as 1.5 lb. Gamma Fluorocarbon Ice 2 lb for a leader with Power Pro Ice TEC 5 lb line.

That said, I found myself fishing 40′ of water with Jiggin’ Raps and I had 2# and 3# Berkley Ice and had no problem hooking and landing large white bass. Not only did the light mono work, but I out fished my partners by a considerable margin. The stretch was not a negative factor.

T Ando a few years ago I started using ASSO Heavy 3# it’s a floro line. Before that I tried about everything. It performs real well and I fish it on spinning, fly reels, and my 6061. I’ve fished it many times on Kab & Rainy in 30′ plus water. I get twist with my spinning reel but NONE on the other 2. For shallow water Gills I go down to their 2#. Give it a try.
December 2, 2013 at 12:50 pm #1368127I’ve fished as deep as 29 feet with 3# sufix ice magic clear and didnt have any problem seeing the little 3″ perch peck the jig with my TUCR noodle. I only caught a couple because I wanted to say I caught a fish out of the deepest water I’ve seen yet ice fishing.
I took advantage of sportsmans guide’s free shipping sale (still on I believe!) and got some 2# ice magic to try this year. Previously all I used was trilene micro ice 2lb in the gray color, really impressed with the sufix! All of my rods will be switched over. I’ve got 10 spools here from sportsmans guide, 7 spools of 3# and 2 spools of 2#. Can’t beat it at less than $3 a spool and free shipping!

December 3, 2013 at 6:41 pm #1368423That was meant to be 8 spools of 3# and 2 spools of 2#… I CAN count to 10 LOL!!!
