Self inflating pfd’s

Looking to purchase one for ice fishing safety. Just bought a snow suit 2 years ago so the flotation suits are not an option. Anyone using these? If so what brands and any feedback would be appreciated. I was a little concerned about relying on the self inflating during extreme cold conditions.

Be careful with the “self inflating” ones,I believe they are made to wear on the “outside” of your clothing not inside of your snow suit.

If you bought something like this>> life jacket big enough you could wear it on the outside of your suit.

My intention is to wear it on the outside. Might get a little tight on the inside if it went off!

you might want to do more research on these before you spend the money. I have heard they won’t inflate correctly in that cold of water and if they do they get so big that they could hinder your ablility to get out of the water and back on the ice if you go in.

I’ve had the gander mountain one and it was ok. Not to comfortable for me since it was not long like the mustang it was kind of bulky around the neck. It was the auto/manual inflate model. Purchased for early spring and late fall fishing but never tried it on the ice. I’m sure it would work but like I said it was bulky.
Once mine auto inflated by itself in the garage and it would not rearm right I went and got a jacket and love it. Besides the rearm cylinders and not readily available.

I would look at the mustang brand they seem to make a superior product. We talking about you safety so don’t be to cheep. My jacket was under $400 I would think you life is worth that if you are looking down this route.

I hear you on that. My Mustang suit cost around $350, but the MSRP was much higher. It’s a chunk of cash, but worth it for me, if I have to go out on the ice when the pucker factor is up a bit. Even a regular pfd vest is better than nothing, although there is bulkiness to deal with.
