Does line color really make a difference? I see where people use anything from clear fluoro, brown fluoro, orange Suffix, yellow Vicious, blue PowerPro. Does any of it really make a difference or is it all in our heads?

I’ve personally always used clear mono. Clear fluoro is tempting, but I just haven’t been able to consistently tie dependable knots with it. A lot of guys I know like the colored lines as they are easier to see on the ice and have good contrast against the ice when tightline line watching. It’s the ol’ personal preference thing I guess.

Maybe the best line color is clear. It blends with any water color then. BUT….its not easy to see in many situations. Clear isn’t always tough. Clear isn’t always without memory. Lots of things come into play with line color. Most people develop a liking for specific lines for specific reasons and these are developed, not suggested. Which line is best for you is a real personal decision.

My personal preference is a Hi-Vis for all of the reasons ever stated. However, if this hinders my ability to catch fish then I can adapt and overcome.

I agree it’s more personal preference than anything else. I have a red nylon braid line for the tip ups that will get used this year. I have a spool of pink fireline, which won’t get used for ice fishing, but will get used for open water trolling. Again, it’s personal preference.

This would be so much easier if we could just get a fish to talk.

I purchased bright green line last year and had great result with it fishing for walleye. Buddies of mine told me that the fish would see it. But I don’t think I had any issues with that. I am trying orange this year just to compare.

I tie in 6lb seagar fluorocarbon when the water is real clear. Its strong and ties well. Caught a 55 lb sturgeon on the Miss R on it with a join knot to power pro. Not sure that you could ask more of any line!!!

It depends on your type and style of fishing. I am a braid guy so those of you who fish braid can relate.

Here is the line i use. I order it both in bright green and white. In certain situations one is better over the other. I am not concerned about visibility because i use a 3 foot fluorocarbon leader that acts as a shock absorber.

A lot of times it helps to see your line visibly when a fish hits to quicken your reaction time, especially when fishing outside. And i have complete confidence that my presentation is as stealth as possible below the ice due to the fluoro leader.

I can’t say that if does, but I feel I am very lucky to be able to see the clear ice lines and not need to find out!

A guy I fish with uses cajun red ice line and does well.

I also use Sufix Flo Green and Orange mono for most all my
walleye fishing, hard or soft water…including the crystal clear waters of the Great Lakes.
To think fish will shy away from colored line is false…I used to think that before fishing with James Holst and several very successful years since…Bright orange is my favorite now, especially on dark/overcast light conditions.
