So with the upcoming ice season approaching i have been thinking about adding something to my aresenal that i have been putting off for years-ice picks. These are one of those things that isnt fun to spend money on but you know it would be a good idea in that time of need. I know nothing about ice picks. Are some better than others (design, brand)? Im not looking for the diamond platted model i just want something simple that could save my life if i were to fall in.

    Thanks for the input!

Make or get a pair that are tied together. If they are in your pocket or bucket you may not be able to get to them. When I took a swim last year , the bucket was out of arms reach along with my coat and the hole I made would have kept me from getting them out of my bib pockets. Fortunately I had the picks hanging around my neck so they pulled me out just fine. My flotation bibs kept me from getting wet above my armpits, so that $300 for the combo was well spent too.

HT Ice Picks. Not sure if one brand is better than another. As long as they don’t fail when they are needed. I picked up a set of these this weekend for $6.00 locally.

I have the frabill ones. Also a good 10 bucks spent on some spikes for your boots. First ice is always tricky with no snow and I wipe at least once a trip.

The picks we use with our mustang suits are just the orange plastic cheapo ones. I have used them while training several times and have not seen any issues, and this training involves 350 plus people

BE SURE TO PULL THE PICKS APART ONCE IN A WHILE – MINE ARE SEVERAL YEARS OLD AND THEY WERE TOO TIGHT TO PULL APART UNTIL I CLEANED THEM AT THE BEGINNING OF LAST ICE SEASON.

My dad made me a pair with an old jumprope, two wooden dowels, and a nail. I’ve also got some cheap HT ones. Gotta have them early ice.

I haven’t come across a expensive set but that doesn’t mean there not out there. I don’t care if there 5 bucks or 100, odds are your equipment costs way more than that and most likely would not help get you back on top. Cheap insurance in my opinion.
