Contact IceNutz. He made some for me and they work well. Pretty inexpensive as well.

What exactly does a tip down do and what is the advantage of it over using a noodle rod in a rod holder?

I’m sure a noodle would do the same thing… but here are a few differences.

A tipdown will have about 2-3 feet of travel at the same resistance to the fish (virtually none), a noodle would be about 6″ before it hits backbone and the fish feels it.

A tipdown would be easy to see from 30-40 yards away when a light bite happens, I know I couldn’t see a noodle tip from 40 yards away.

Tipdowns are cheap if a big catfish or something grabs it when you are far away, a noodle rod + reel is a heck of a lot more expensive!

Tipdowns count as tipups (at least here they do) so we are allowed 2 rods plus 3 tipdowns on the Miss river. A noodle in a rod holder is counted as a rod.

    You have me curious
In inland waters in Iowa then, how many tip downs can you have along with 2 rods?
I always played 1 rod and 1 tip down figuring 2 lines were the max you can have in the water?
I didn’t know rules were different with tip downs or is that just a river thing?

Tip Downs as said give a Crappie, Perch, or Walleye about 2 ft of line with almost no resistance. The ones we build and sell come with a safety line that clips to an eye screw in the butt of the rod and is tied to another screw eye in the stand.

I have had several northerns pull the pole down the hole when I was not watching closely and the safety line saved my pole. The Bass that is in my picture was caught on a Tip Down at the GTG on the St Croix.

If you have any questions about them feel free to PM or call me.

Here is a good video that James did on Crappies using Tip Downs.
