Does anyone know anything about stump lake? I went there last year and wasn’t able to find the fish. I don’t like piggy backing off of others and just moving in on their are if they are posted up. I am stationed at GF AFB and if anone knows of anywhere else near here that is a good spot for some eyes and perch.

Isn’t Devils Lake just a couple more miles west?

A handle of “Gophericepride” living in N.D. and asking for fishing help. Good luck, man. Just joking. (former N.D. man myself). Why wouldn’t you just keep driving and go to Devils Lake?

If I remember right they are only about 20 feet apart.

I am originally from MN just stationed here by chance. I do get a lot of dirty looks when I where my gopher gear thought. I swear they look at me like I hit a panda.

I don’t enjoy Devils as much because there are a lot more people to deal with and resorts. Stump is secluded and has the same fish and from my experience just as much or more size because of the depth of stump.

Well, this was quite a few years ago but we went to Devils Lake and the bite wasn’t very good. A local suggested Stump Lake so we headed to the park off the north center part of the lake then drove up the shoreline to the right. We found and area where there were some holes drilled so we stopped and fished. It was right next to some tree tops that had blue heron nests that you could almost look into. We caught at least 800 perch (200 each) between 4 of us, all about 10 inches as they looked like they came out of a mold. We were the only ones on the lake. Later that evening the guy who suggested it to us told that the water finally spilled over from Devils Lake and what was a lake too salty for anything but shrimp was now fresh enough for perch and they planted like 2 million a few years back. No walleyes and any water drops that evaporated on our equipment left a white salty film. It was the best perch fishing I have ever experienced and fishing right next to the tree tops in 25 feet of water was an interesting experience. I am sure that things are different but I couldn’t resist as your post brought back a good memory!
    Thanks

There was a period last winter when perch fishing on Stump Lake was quite a bit better than on Devils Lake. It has a lot to do with forage conditions (mainly freshwater shrimp) and how much they have to eat.

The water in Stump Lake is quite clear and the perch schools seem to move around a lot. One reliable place to start looking is on the outside edge of any flooded trees in 35′ plus FOW. Mobility is key to consistent success on Stump.

Anytime! It’s still like that if you can get on the fish. We go trolling in the summer on a submerged road and get some decent eyes and its usually pretty consistent. I enjoy stump a lot.

I’ve fished Devils 4 times this winter with a lot less success than last winter especially for perch. I’ve had many people come into my work and tell me that they’ve been having real good luck for perch at Stump so far with a few walleyes mixed in. I haven’t personally tried it but I might be on Monday. Just from second hand reports I would suggest Stump over Devil’s right now.

I have never been to stump, where would you recommend going? Or about how deep are the perch? Tomorrow is our last day up here. Today it was still slow on devils lake.
