How fast does ice form?

Hey guys, first time poster but have really enjoyed reading all the posts on here for quite some time. This being only my second year ice fishing I’m unfamiliar with how quick ice forms on lakes. I know there are many variables when forming ice (wind, depth, temperature etc). My usual lake is a fairly large valley lake with depths of 60 feet. Based on this forecast, any chance I’ll be out by the end of the month? Sorry, just a little excited to get out there.

With those temps I would believe so.

It depends what temperature your lake is currently at too, the temps look good for getting ice by the end of the month, but if your lake is currently over 45 degrees , that can change the game some. What’s the lake’s acreage? Any large inlets?

I know a little bit of ice has formed around the shore, but not much. It is roughly 3200 acres but no major inlets to speak of. It is part of a chain of lakes all within 10 minutes driving distance of one another. The largest being 5000 acres. There is very little current to speak of as well.

I gotta say, I’ve referenced that chart in the past and it seems to be fairly accurate!

    Here ya go.

Here is a article on ice formation.

That’s pretty awesome, I’ve never really read anything about ice formation and that chart is really helpful. Crazy that it can go from no ice to 2-3 inches should you get a cold enough day or two.

This chart is amazing, but it is most accurate under the right circumstances too; it doesn’t take into account wind, snow, humidity, lake temperature, depth, current, or springs… but it is still a great way to judge whether or not it is worth taking a hike to check the ice for yourself!
