Something to hold on to if you fall in and can’t get back out.

20’+ long rope untangled with something heavy tied to one end

What is this for and what heavy item would you tie at the end?

It is so you can throw the rope farther to someone who fell through or for you to throw to someone because you went through….you can attach anything that gives you this extra weight….I use a piece of metal rod.

That was a good video. Very interesting. I have started keeping a 50 ft rope with couple of big washers on the end with me the last few years of early ice and just keeping it in the portable.

When I read 20′ I assumed it was for “personal” use. For a throw rope, you want WAYYY more than 20 feet. You want at least 50 yards, 100 would be better. Boat bumper on the end works best, it will float.

I have the frabill ice suit that is non floating. What style pfd would you reccomend? Will a co2 cartridge vest inflate in low temps or is a Non inflating vest nessasary?

the inflatable will not inflate properly in that cold of water and even if they do they will be in the way when you try to get out of the water and back on the ice. I would go with a tradition open water type life jacket if you didn’t go with a floating suit. the life jacket that I recommend is the one that Clam just put out this year. it is designed around ice fishing but can still be used during the open water season. it is coast guard approved. check it out, it’s not a bad option.
