I was spooling up my ice rods today and I thought I would share something I do.

I like to start out with braid at the beginning 8 lb test 3 lb dia 50 yards on a Shimano 500 series, then 30-50 feet of mono like 2 lb test…

the mono doesn’t get all coiled up and if you’re in a spot where you would like to beef up your gear you could always strip off the little bit of mono you have on without wasting a lot of it.

Great thinking! Thanks. What is your favorite braid for ice fishing?

The braid is great idea since you have 50 ft of mono the braid will not come off the reel and freeze up, I would go with 3lb mono, I don’t like loosing a nice fish to a break off on light line.

Do you start with a few inches of mono on the spool? With heavier braid, the whole batch will slide on the spool since there is no stretch to cinch against the spool.

A short piece of scotch tape over the hard line knot will solve that issue

That’s great idea I never thought of doing that. I think I’m going to have to try that on a couple rods this year!
