I noticed that Clam came out with a new one man shelter for this season, the X1 Thermal. Looks like it would be a great thing to have come the first weekend of December; when I make my first trip to Upper Red. I really like the fact that a guy can fit two of them into the bed of a truck. Has anyone seen this in person yet? I’m chomping at the bit to get a good look at this thing!

Clam had both the X1 and the Legend Thermal sitting side by side at the Thorne Brothers get together. I sat in both and personally liked the Legend better do to the greater head room. I did like the fact that the X1 was the heavier duty tub and the larger pole system and the gray tube inside but the only thing I didn’t care for was the height of it (59″ vs 67″ for the Legend. honestly on a lake like Red you would be better off with a x1 since the sled is made to be pulled behind a ATV or Snowmobile, where as the Legend sled is lighter and not designed to be machine pulled for long distances. the other difference is the X1 has a heavier material that makes up the shell of the house (900 Denier)and the Legend is only 600 Denier. both come with the deluxe seat and the new light bar this year. They should both be on display at the Blaine Hardwater Expo and the St. Paul Ice Show. you could also check with Gander Mountain or Cabelas or even Fleet Farm to see if they have either model on display. I plan to run a Legend Thermal this year since I don’t pull it behind a machine of any kind. can’t wait to use it. hoping to do a review mid season and again at the end of the season on the Legend and other new clam products I plan to use this season.

I looked at that clam online and its pretty nice It has been awesome for the sportsmen these last couple years with many of the innovations and technology enhancements we have. Often when the economy is in the dump, many companies don’t spend money on R&D and they sit in the wait and see mode. A testament to quality companies when they continue to bring new innovative ideas to market under grim outlooks!
I saw the new Shappell fold over at the Robinson Wholesale Show last week. That has a couple features that I thought were very unique. Much deeper sled and with pulling 1 support pole, it collapses side-to-side and covers itself for travel. It also had a built in shelf for electronics to keep them off the floor and out of the way. The sliding seat was a little taller and 5gal. + some styles of 6 gallon buckets can fit beneath the seat. Shappell doesn’t have the thermal blanket like the Otters, but they are a very well constructed shelter.

I think Clam makes great products, I for one am probably picking up a Clam Nanook this winter. However I actually liked the Eskimo Wide 1 Inferno better but maybe thats just me.

However not exactly sure of the Wide 1 specs as Eskimo’s got it posted differently on their site.
