Roach’s presentation, “ Secrets to Icing More Walleyes,” is set for 10-11 a.m. Hawthorne’s s eminar, “Rippin’ Red Lake Walleye,” is set for 2-3 p.m. Q & A sessions will follow.
Walleye ‘Secrets’ Seminar Sneak Peek
Roach shared this exclusive sneak peek at his seminar, in which he will share secrets to icing more walleyes:
“Half the challenge for ice anglers is finding fish – especially when it pertains to walleye fishing,” he says. “A lot guys know how to deploy techniques, like spoon fishing and Jigging Raps, and things like that, but when it comes to actually breaking down good spots to look for, early season mid season and late, it’s more of a challenge.”
Attend Roach’s seminar and he’ll offer proven ice-trolling techniques to overcome that challenge.
“What I do with Ice trolling is lot different than simply ‘hole hoping,’” he explains. “It’s a pretty strategic way I go about looking for fish. It’s not just grabbing my StrikeMaster and drilling a bunch of random holes.”
He will discuss also the different techniques he uses based on what he sees on his MarCum sonar unit.
“Based on how I’m seeing the fish on structure and how they’re located in the water column, I’ll determine how to keep the fish biting all day,” Roach says. “Because that’ the other challenge that walleye anglers face – they might have a great morning bite and a great evening bite, but during the day, their bite slows down.”
He will share tips for “triggering those finicky fish all day long and all season long.”
Rippin’ Red ‘Eyes Seminar Sneak Peek
Hawthorne shared this exclusive sneak peek at his seminar, in which he will give tips for targeting Upper Red Lake walleyes through the ice with a Rapala Rippin’ Rap:
“You can send that thing flying down the hole and a lot of time, those fish are going to grab it before it hits the bottom, because its so loud,” he says.
Hawthorne began targeting walleyes through the ice with Rippin’ Raps – traditionally an open-water bait – last winter on Mille Lacs. He explained how to get on that bite in this ICE FORCE blog post. [http://blog.iceforce.com/products/winter-deep-water-tactics-with-the-rapala-rippin-rap/ ]
But what worked on Mille Lacs was less effective on Upper Red Lake. In fact, almost the exact opposite approach was effective!
“Instead of just shaking it slightly, like when you get their attention on Mille Lacs, up on Red, you can let it rocket down the hole and make a racket,” Hawthorne explains.
And the tactic yields different classes of fish on Upper Red than it does on Mille Lacs.
“On Upper Red Lake, you’ll smoke huge slot-fish with this technique – magnum, 15- to 20-inch slot fish,” Hawthorne says. “On Mille Lacs, it’s a big-fish-targeting technique.”
In the seminar, Hawthorne will expand more on different ways to use the Rippin’ Rap on Upper Red Lake when “the fish are aggressive, when they’re a little neutral and when you’re trying to get a reaction.”
