I’m looking into getting a 32″ precision ice rod from Tuned Up Custom Rods. I mainly fish walleye with 1/8oz spoons. My question is should I look into the split grip or not? Thanks for the help.

Its your rod BUY it the way YOU WANT it !

Some will say yes, some will say no, bottom line what do you want! If there is way you can feel the difference between split grip and full handle do it, decide from there for you feel and taste.

Good point just wanted to see if one might be better then the other with this big purchase for me. I’ve always had handles so thinking that’s what I’m going for.

I have that same rod with a split grip. If I had to do it again today I would order the same rod. I love the split grip.

I do like the split grip on ice rods, but I build my own so I can see if it is something I like/want..rods feel different to each owner.
Dont buy something just because he said she said…

The cost is high enough on today’s ice rods, we dont need to buy some thing we dont like, just be sure you buy what you want in a rod.

    Good luck with your purchase

Split grips serve in getting you direct contact with the blank. When you are pistol gripping the rod it gives you maximum feel. We currently have both in stock.

I am in the process of finishing up a personal split grip build and just for kicks yesterday I put a reel on it and tied on a jig. I am really really surprised at the amount of added feel I have with my hand directly on the blank, I can’t wait to actually try it out on the ice this year.

I would say to the OP that if you are wanting a feel rod, get the split grip but if you are going to be relying on seeing tip movement then the split grip might not be what you want, not that it will hurt anything.

Yes it completely changes the feel of the rod. That small portion of direct contact with the blank helps.

Another thing that it does is change the grip angle to be more comfortable with fishing a pistol grip style.

It is well worth it in my opinion.

I think,it depends on if you wear gloves or not.I have a split that I use for panfish and saugeye, but it’s hard for me,to wear gloves. Ordered a new 36″ straight grip yesterday,to take care of that issue.

I’ll echo John’s comments, and also say that it makes the rod fish more like the precision instrument that it is. For me, that’s mostly because the cork is “segmented”, meaning I can more easily palm and grip the rod and maintain some contact with that blank. It reminds me of the first time I fished the St. Croix Legend Extreme as an open water rod. By shrinking the cork a bit and giving some more room to get some contact with that blank, it makes the whole rod more sensitive and gives you better control. So much so, that you’re initially concerned that it’ll be fragile, which isn’t the case for either of those rods.

John, are you guys going to have a booth this year at the WI ice fishing show in Wausau? I’m just curious as I would love to get my hands on a couple of your ice sticks and feel them in person. I love my split-grips which is why I am so interested in your versions of the splits, they are phenomenal from what I’ve seen and heard about them.

We are not going to have a booth in WI this year.

    Sorry.

Check out Skeeter Boat Center if you are close to them. They have our entire lineup.

Have 7 custom rods on order. 3 from TUC and 4 from DH. All will have 4″ carbon fiber handle, both fiberglass and carbon rod blanks. Used a carbon fiber handle last winter and would be tough for me to get away from it. Looking forward to using all of them this winter.

I’m liken’ those carbon handles too, use them on summer rods also.
