What are your favorite custom ice rods and mass produced rods?? I mostly use 1/8oz to 3/8oz spoons and smaller rapalas…I’m not sure yet if I want to spend the money on a custom rod…Thanks for any suggestions…Not good I’m already thinking of ice fishing lol

I love the Thorne Bros. Perch Sweetheart, especially with the recoil guides. It is insanely light and ultra sensitive.

I will also say Thorne Bros Sweetheart rod. I have two and wouldn’t fish for walleyes with anything else. They are usually 10% off at the Ice Fishing Show in St Paul in December.

I like my Perch Sweathart and also Precision Rod from TUCR. Be sure to get the recoil guides.

I make all my own rods! Just ordered 10 mhx carbon blanks to mess around with. Actually it’s very easy to do and you can custom to exactly what you want.

Same here! Takes little to nothing to get started and most companies will sell their blanks.

St. Croix Legend ice rods 32″ medium action. Good backbone with a soft tip. And you can never go wrong with the built in strike indicator.

I also make my own. Get my blanks from fly rod tippets from st. Croix. Work great!! When ever I borrow one out it tends to be hard to get them back. I like a longer rod and most that are carry a hefty price tag. Have used a buddies thorne brothers sweetheart 32″ and liked that. Cant wait for ice!!

Are you fishing inside the shack or outside? Length with factory rods are usually limited to 32″ or under. If you are fishing outside a lot a 36″ rod is very nice.

REC guides are worth it honestly. They are lighter and more durable than anything else on the market currently.

Whatever rod I’m using that catches one at the time I can’t justify spending too much money on just one ice fishing pole. But I’m sure if I used one lets say from Thorne Bros it would be pretty darn nice!

I am love with my 36″ TUC precision… I bought it last early November and after just one trip out I immediately picked up a 2nd. And if it’s any indication of how impressed I was besides the 2 precisions I now have a precision noodle, a precision power, and as soon I can pick it up I will have at least 1 of the new precision quicktips… Plues I worked with the guys at tuned-up to get custom made 36″ precision rods for my dad, father-in-law, and the groomsman in my wedding in April. I guess you could say I think TUC makes a good rod

    Thorne Brothers Perch Sweetheart
    DH Custom Rods Perch Pounder
Tuned Up Custom Rods Precision Ice Rod

In no particular order, these three are the top custom walleye rods out there. The only real standout point of any of them is that DH handicaps himself by only making the Perch Pounder to 28″. I highly recommend you go at least 32″ unless you fish in some kind of tiny shelter (I use my 32″ TUC Precision inside a 1 man Clam product with no problems).

Check out these three companies websites, send emails to them, call them, whatever, just check them all out and contact them. They all make great custom rods that perform amazing. Check them all out and you make the choice but the truth is you really cant go wrong with any of them!

Just to set the record straight we DO offer our Perch Pounder in a 32″, our Walleye Stinger in as long as 34″ and our New Longboard noodle goes out to 32″ As well, our Gill Seeker was brought back this year (UL Carbon) and will be built out to 30″ and look for the new “Pantom” ice rod this winter.

Thanks, and Best of luck to all! DH

That’s good to hear and I’m glad to see you are transitioning into longer rods this year. Care to share any more info on this new “Pantom” model?

Curse you guys! Between TUCR and your new rod I’m going to go broke. LOL. This will mean two new ice rods in the same year for me now! Can’t watch that video and not like the way that panfish rod works.

Plain and simple TUC 36 precision for a few reasons.

-REc guides are light, great balance factor,

-Action ofthe rod allows for great hooksets, I fish on the missouri river through the ice alot of times deeper than 30 foot and we all knw how mono stretches

-Start fishing with a longer rod and you will lose less fish, I said this year after the season that not only did I hook more fish but I landed those fishe with buried trebles. Alof of times people hook up for a few seconds then the fish is off, if you bury the trebles most of the time you can let the line go slack and the fish will not come off. TUC precision in the 36 inch length allowed me to land some really big fish this year and the longer rod absorbs the headshakes a big walleye makes much better than a shorter Rod, like will I have multiple precisions as well as noodles, and quicktips I like em,
