It depends on a few factors.

What type of fish are you looking for?

    Time of year?

What lake can also play a role.

Can you provide more info on fish species and maybe a region of the state?

Like he said, there are many factors which will determine what to look for.

    Here are some links

The one tip I can give you is generally the closer the lines, the harder the bottom.

The closer the lines. the steeper the the grade(break line). I fish Castle Rock in central WI. It has allot of fast break lines some are rock some are sand and some are muck.

Obviously it is a steeper break, but it can also tip you off to the bottom composition, although, yes, you can have muddy breaks.
