    LOL

    FWIW –

In follow up to the whitefish show from last week, that show has had the most views in one week after release of any show we’ve EVER done with the highest growth in new subscribers in one week we’ve ever seen over a one week period.

Apparently these “non-walleye” shows are a good idea after all.

Darn right they are! I sent the link to a few peeps and they loved it. We have all seen walleye caught through the ice on every fishing show. This is the first I have seen completely dedicated to Lake Whitefish that gave information on catching them!

I hope to see some open water fishing of new species.

Just to confirm, I was being sarcastic.

James, I am curious what general area you were fishing. At first I thought near the BWCA, but I kinda ruled that out.

I was surprised you guys didn’t keep any. Those are put and take lakes where a lot of fish don’t live past 4-5 years. Lakes with rainbows I know can live much longer though.

I read you loud and clear.

As for where… we were up near Red Lake. The area between Grand Rapids and Red Lake is a hot bed for lakes that hold trout.

Right after we wrapped up shooting that show we had to hit the road to the next destination so we didn’t have an opportunity to keep any fish.

Yup. Schedules are getting tight when we’re making use of pump time. Last week was a blur.

Great episode! Probably the best of the season. Always fun catching trout through the ice. If you ever get the chance and can catch the right ice conditions, fishing for Chinook Salmon through the ice on the face of the Oahe Dam in South Dakota is a riot. Fish for your smelt first, then hook’em up and have fun.

Where’s the Homer Simpson drooling emoticon?! Salmon on an ice rod would be outrageous. How often have you hit that bite?

Glad you like the rainbow episode. Jon Marshall is a great guy to fish with… always a riot.

Awl.. done with ice fishing shows already? I definitely would like to see more ice shows next year if its in the budget. Also maybe the likes of something very different like eel pout or smelt? I know that may not be much of a challenge but it would invite some interesting new ideas and techniques.

We’re always pushing for more funding so we can do…. more.

But don’t think we’re done putting out ice fishing video for this season. We have a lot of good stuff to come. It just won’t air on FSN. If you subscribe to our Youtube channel you’ll know the second we put up new ice content.

It’s been a few years since we’ve had decent ice on the face of the dam to feel comfortable going out, so I haven’t done it in a couple of years but it’s a riot! Hook a 7, 8 or 9 pound salmon on an ice rod the you’ll definitely being doing the Homer… Do’h.

The trout fishing episode was perfect timing since I’ve been planning on taking my 12 year old son out to a little trout lake this next coming week.

Would love to see some more episodes filmed in South Dakota. Some tend to forget there are more lakes then just Oahe, Waubay and Bitter as well as other fish besides walleye and perch. Still love my walleye & perch, but as your said on the show, variety is the spice of life

Oh, and by the way, a new South Dakota State Record was just set for a Lake Trout caught through the ice. SDGFP just announced the fish officially set the record, weighing in at 30 pounds even, and measured 41 inches in length with a 24½ inch girth.

You can find the stories here….. Now that would definitely be a Homer…Do’H!

That is a TOAD! I got into 4 like that over a span of a day and a half this past fall on open water… can’t even imagine catching one on a short rod…. but would love to try!

Hey James what kind of structure were you targeting to find these fish. I’m heading out next week to try for some bows and looking for a little extra info.

I really enjoyed the show. Trout fishing through the ice is very addicting.

One question out of curiousity; were you on lakes in the reservation that require a guide? I saw an article earlier this year about lakes the Red Lake reservation stock that are great trout fishing but you need to have an indian guide from the reservation. I was just curious because I fish in that general area on trout lakes and they all get plenty of pressure (especially ones that good) and it looked like the lakes you were on have hardly been fished.

Those small lakes and ponds are on tribal ground waters. It requires a tribal guide to fish these waters. I am salivating the moment one day when they do decide to open up and guide lower red to the public. It would be a fantastic experience.

But if your looking for more info:

Thanks Andy that’s what I thought. Maybe I missed it but I don’t believe they mentioned that in the video. They made it seem like u could go up and fish any trout lake in that area and smash em so I was wondering if I was doing something wrong.

Are u sure they don’t offer guides on lrl? I know guys who hire a “guide” to duck hunt the lake on the res side.

Sorry guys, just getting caught back up…

We actually added contact info for Darwin Sumner to the video description on youtube so people COULD contact him and get the info they needed to fish these lakes.

    From Youtube:

For more info on targeting rainbows through the ice, reach out to Darwin Sumner at http://www.redlakeoutdoors.net/ for info. He’s a wealth of knowledge when it comes to trout through the ice!

License cost is $10 day. You don’t necessarily need a guide per se but you do need to have a native gain you access and travel with you when on reservation land. So I guess that’s guiding…. But anyway, give Darwin a shout if you want to fish those lakes. He’s one of the nicest guys you’ll ever spend a day with and those res lakes receive no pressure.
