Homemade Ice Rod

Epoxy just dried on today’s project. A 36″ handmade brush rod. If you don’t know what a brush rod is, they are used for hopping around shallow brush here in the miss backwaters. Typical fishing is done in less than 4 feet of water right in the thick of the laydowns. You set the hook and pull them out in one motion so they don’t get you tangled. Rigged with 4# micro ice red, most guys use 6# though. And of course a #8 ratso.

Spinning rod guides, wooden handle, and a cheapo schooley type reel. I’d say its a medium light, moderate action.

Definitely a different style of fishing than most are used to.

The old guys around here look at you sideways when you pull out a spinning rod. Personally, if I can use my flasher I’m using the TUC noodle and spinning reel. When I’m fishing in the junk then I just use an “old school” set-up. Bobber when its windy or really cold, otherwise a spring stuck in the tip.

Twitch Twitch Pause 5 times, if there is no hit then its on to the next hole.

Not a day goes by where a ratso does not go down the hole. Some days they just nibble them, but I have not seen a place where a ratso won’t get bit. For the miss backwaters there is nothing better. Crappie and bluegill love them. Problem is, the carp and bass do also!

Those would make great rods for tip-downs.

I remember the good old days on Lake Onalaska using similar rods. Not much line needed for sure.
