Making my first trip to Red Lake and I was wondering if there is any helpful hints about fishing the lake. What type of minnows should I bring? Is there a good place to pick up bait on the way up there? What sort of jigs should I be using? Anything that you think would be helpful?

    Thanks

I was up there the fish week of January. We did really good using swedish pimples tipped with a minnow head. We took up fat heads and red tailed chubs. One thing that worked good was hooking the minnows in the tail. Rattle reels and slip bobber rigs worked good with #6 plain red hook or a chartuse. Good luck

Haven’t been there for awhile (crappie boom) but…There are baitshops right at the lake to get minnows. They will know what to give you I’m sure. Same with jigs/spoons.
Main thing to get your head around is that the lake is big. I mean real big. Take what you think as big and multiply it by several times. You will likely drive out several miles from shore to where you fish. Be prepared for cold and wind. Take a shovel and plenty of propane. The place can be nasty and unforgiving weather wise so you have to be ready for that.

Timberline Sport and Tackle in Blackduck is an excellent place for bait and tackle. Jigs and spoons in glow red or white seem to work well. Be prepared to do battle with a big Northern or two while you are up there, they seem to be plentiful. Have fun.

Was there the weekend before the New Year, the fishing was hot then. My 2 hot lures were a red lindy rattlin’ flyer and a swedish pimple, silver with red tape. From my experience, I lost a few hook-ups with the smaller swedish pimple, so I switched out the smaller treble for a little bit bigger one, didn’t miss a one after I made the switch!
