I just don’t think there is any reason for your hole’s to be bigger than 8″s other than a permanent house.

We fish a lot of lake trout. If you have compared turning a 15+lb trout into an 8″ hole as opposed to a 10″, you would see at least 1 reason some people prefer them.

I fish a lot of Lake Trout as well and I prefer an 8″ hole… once the fishes head gets in the hole it’s all over. 10″ hole and it’s a sheetshow trying to grab the gill plate.

The biggest I have seen come through a 8″ hole was an 18# and it was a real bugger to get turned. I have seen several 20+ come through a 10″ and I am not sure that most if those would have been landed in a 8″ hole. Getting a hawg to turn its head is not easy. Give me a 10″ hole any day.

If nils came out with a 10″, I would be first in line.

    But they won’t

Every one of these fish was pulled through an 8″ hole drilled by none other than the amazing Nils Master ice auger.
    14.5, 15.1, 25.2

An 8″ hole has over a 25″ circumference… Good luck catching a fish with a girth like that.

    Very nice trout!

I know they will fit – but I have a far easier time getting them to turn their heads in a 10″ as opposed to an 8″. When I landed an 18lb trout in an 8″ hole – it took a few minutes to finally have the fish turn just right to get started – once it did, no problem.

Sweet trout! That’s next on my list to fish for. Where was this at?

Thanks… fish of a lifetime for my dad (for now anyway)

Actually, all those fish were caught by my old man. I just pick spots and drill holes for him and then he catches all the big fish while I pull out the 5-8 lbers. Honestly I think he enjoys it more than I would though, he’s like a little kid when he’s hooked up to big fish, I love it.

Here’s a couple action shots… the fist one is from when he first laid eyes on the 25.2 below the ice.

Is it rude if I say I prefer not to post where I catch big fish on the internet for the whole world to see?

Nope. Was just asking area, not specific lakes. That’s your call
