LX-7 transducer depth

From the LX-7 manual, it essentially says the transducer only needs to be down a few inches below the water level. This is contrary to anything I’ve ever read about ice transducers. All other units I’ve owned have said that the ducer needs to be below the underside of the ice.

Anyone have any knowledge or experience with this?

    From the manual:

    Quote:

Setting up the transducer for ice fishing: When used in conjunction with the retractable pivoting transducer arm and rubber stopper, the LX7’s transducer will automatically level itself in your ice hole. To begin operation, take the transducer out of the recessed holder, and rotate the adjustable ice arm out from inside the shuttle. Extend transducer arm, (the cable should already be threaded through it with stopper in place) and deploy the transducer into the water. We recommend setting your stopper to have the transducer down the least amount possible. The LX-7 puts out enough power that in most cases it is not necessary to have your transducer down more than a few inches below the water line to get a good reading. When the ice thickness is over two feet, it may be necessary to have your transducer set farther down. Remember–the less transducer cable you have out, the easier it is to pull it out of the water when bringing in a fish, or to move to a new location.

Here in south/central WI we average about 12-16 inches of ice in most cases. Some years more or less. Most guys I know running LX-3,5’s, and 7’s have just enough cable out to be aboput 6″ down in the hole and they work fine. I’m sure if the transducer is up against the ice, some of the signal is lost. But even with my old vex fl-8 from almost 20 years ago had a flip arm for a puck transducer that was only about 8″ long. When in the hole, it was only about 3″ down and it worked.
My lx-9 just came today and I’m hoping to get it wet in the morning. I’ll try it at different depths and see if I see any signal quality change

My 5 and 7 will both reach below the ice even in over 2′, I prefer it down there so theres noneed to pull it and less chance of tangles…

The Ice 55 I had last year’s manual specifically said to keep the puck below the ice. Is there that much of a difference between a MarCum and Bird puck that their recommended depths are completely different?

I’ll be on LOTW next weekend and will be sure to experiment with this.
