Here, fishy, fishy…

    Hey guys!

As you can see, I’ve been a lurker for about a year now. Lots of stuff to read!

At any rate, I’m not a great ice-fisherman. I love ice fishing, and I go out as often as I can, but I’ve never landed on a school and just hammered them before. As odd as it sounds, I’ve had days where I caught 1 crappie and just couldn’t find another one. Most of the time I find none.

I have so-so luck with Walleye. I mostly fish Round Lake or the 371 bay of North Long. I’ve only ever been out on Gull once, and that was last summer. Even so, I normally just find tiny things.

Anyways, next week is my birthday and so my mother is coming to visit me this weekend. We don’t get to see each other very often, and she’s kind of getting up there in age. She had back surgery last year and it sounds like she’s going to have to go under the knife again within the next few months. She asked me if I would take her ice fishing Saturday morning, and while I’m inclined to, I don’t want it to be a miserable experience for her.

She’s a fanatical crappie fisher, if not old fashioned (anyone else still fish with cane poles?). There’s nothing her or I would enjoy more than being able to find a spot and pull out some crappies… Heck, anything. I’d really love to make some good lasting memories with her.

As such, is there anyone about that wouldn’t mind giving me a hint or two? I have an LX5 and the Navionics app on my phone so I’m not fishing completely blind (though I find the Navionics app isn’t the most accurate thing around). I’m game for pretty much anything around the Brainerd area.

Can anyone throw me a bone on this one? I’d really appreciate it.

PS: Seems like Spender Spoons are all the rage right now. Is there any place local that sells them (and might even have them in stock)?

    Thank you,

    -Mike

    Welcome!

1.Find a lake in the area with a 30-40 foot basin and post up in the basin. The craps will drift all over it.

2.Buy some ratsos and rat finkis.

    3.Put 2-3 waxies on them.

    4.Put lx-5 in the water.

5.Be patient for 45 minutes pay attention to depth they are hanging.

6.Graph them tease em up and stick em.

7.Set ma’s bobber about 2 feet above where they are coming through.

8.Have fun out there and tight lines!

Even if you don’t stick’em. It isn’t as much of the bag you catch, its the time you will spend together. God bless and tight lines.

I’m a bit jealous. My mother loves to fish, but physical ailments have stopped her from being able to go with me for the last 5+ years. Both open water and hard. Enjoy that time with your mom. When the day comes that she can’t go with, it hurts

We’ve usually held a Tip-Up gathering on the ice where even my mom will come out onto the ice and fish. We eat, build a fire, kind of watch the flags. Its a good time.

I wish you the best. I can’t get my mom or mywife one the ice. Take my parents in the summer some and finally got my wife out this last year again(she beat me up bad). Got my dad out early before he went on a trip this year and we picked the right day and place and smoked them by Detroit Lakes. Good luck and good memories!

We always talk about fishing, but we rarely do it. I have a small aluminum boat that’s too difficult for her to get into with her back issues, so it’s been a couple years since we’ve been able to go. Unfortunately I don’t foresee it getting any better.

But, yeah! Totally excited. I was looking over the MN DNR Lake Finder page and I noticed that Crow Wing Lake has a pretty good survey from 2010. Not a deep lake, but who knows.

Thanks again for all the tips! I’ll likely speak with her tonight and see what sounds good to her.
