Lake Trout Strike

This past Tues. I was up in the Ely area laker fishing. It was -14 plus windchill. I set up in my Otter thermal house and kept toasty warm. After trying to shoot some video last year with just a camcorder I got a POV camera this year to try. I found a way with a underwater case to mount it about a inch in the water. This is my 1st attempt, but think it turned out pretty good. The laker turned out to be 8.6lbs. Sorry for the times it’s off camera, but I can’t control that, and I couldn’t edit it out.

One other note, while most people seem to think you need to speed everything up when you see a laker on your depth finder, I find it to almost be the opposite. If you were reeling something in a straight line, then maybe, but watch how much trouble this fish has trying to catch a airplane jig. Enjoy Click the link if the embedding doesn’t work

That’s awesome! I’ve always wanted to see a laker strike/chase below the ice.

I can’t believe how much stuff (slime and scales) is in the water! I wonder if that’s a laker thing or all fish???

    Nice video

Thanks guys. To answer some questions, I was in about 70ft. I was using a older Contour camera. It has a waterproof housing, so I had it below the waterline about a inch so I could still turn it on. I had it rigged to my otter seat with ready rod. It was a jimmy rig, but it worked I guess it worked.

I had cut 3 holes and chiseled the points out. Most of what you see floating is ice chips that came back in the hole. Although I did see it spit something out too. It’s stomach still had more in it when I cleaned it.

Most of the time I fish the top 20ft of water unless I mark something lower. So yes, I set up the Otter to sight fish in 70 ft. haha That Cabin Thermal had me sweating in -14 degree weather and it got dark enough to see perfectly. That trout went 30″ and went 8.6 on the scale. I didn’t get any good stills since it was a solo run.

I know this is getting long but someone mentioned speed. I’ve found by watching that you almost need to slow down the baits that move all over. Trout are fast, but have a hard time catching the bait as you saw. It’s a fine line between keeping their interest and letting them catch it.
