Problem with Strikemaster recoil

Has anyone had problems with their recoil or recoil rope coming undone in the cold weather? I’ve had one rope rip in half and now today when I tried punching more holes, the actually rope came undone off the spool that holds it and became stuck. It wouldn’t budge one bit. Tried pulling on it to see if I could pull the rope back into alignment and nothing worked. I opened her up when I got home and tried fixing the problem only to make the problem worse. EVERYTHING came undone. It’s the second time this season that I’ve had issues with this. Is it because of bad lubrication? It’s a Lazer Pro and purchased last season. DoM is 2010. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

On a side note, I slammed the crappies today!

They had a recall on the Solo recoils due to the viscosity of the grease that was used in them.

Take it to D-Rock in New Brighton and they’ll fix you up.

Do I have to take it to D-Rock? I’m in Shakopee so its a haul to get there. Could I take it to Nothern Tool in Burnsville and have them fix the issue again for free since it was a recall from StrikeMaster? They are an authorized service center. When did this recall take place?

I think I need a new recoil but tell me if I’m wrong. The spring coil came out of its housing also along with some other washers where I know go. Is winding the spring coil an easy task so I could put off spending more money on it?
I’ve already had to take the auger in to fix this same issue at Northern Tool 3 weeks ago.

I had a problem with the recoil on my magnum a few weeks ago. The rope got wedged between the recoil and the cover , it would not go out any further or back in. I had to take the cover off to get it free. I don’t know if this a result of the same issue or not.

Exactly what happened to mine. About a foot of cord was hanging out. Tried pulling it back into place but nothing. It was stuck between the pulley and the top of the case.

winding that spring is IMPOSSIBLE..happened to me twice last year…that is one of the reasons i got rid of mystrikemasters i brought it to a small engine repair shop and they charged me like 10 bucks to fix it…ordered the recoil kit from SM

Yes, winding that spring will drive you nuts! If it happens to me again I’m gonna turn the auger upside down and use the motor to bang a hole in the ice! This post reminds me I need to get that recoil kit ordered from SM.

Took mine into Northern tool on Weds and upon arrival they had my new recoil waiting for me. Within 5 mins, I was out the door heading to the lake! Didn’t pay a dime

Not a strikemaster, but an Eskimo with a sluggish recoil. I removed the recoil as a unit but did not disassemble it, I then gave it a liberal dousing of TriFlow spraylube and now it returns better than new…and that was after leaving it in sub-zero temps for a few hours. I plan on doing this every year just before hitting the ice.
