Folks, I have a surplus of cash in my “fishing fund” so I want to finally get a high quality rod. Having seen so many people rave about the Thorne Bros Power Noodle I’m set to order one. I’m thinking a custom 26″ length with the outdoor recoil guides. I’m a tip-watcher in the winter (vs. all feel in open water).
However, after watching the video on T.B.’s site, I’m concerned what weight jig it can support and still maximize visual sensitivity. The new rod would be dedicated to 4mm and 5mm (Northland and Fiskas) tungsten jigs. I believe those are quite a bit heavier than the video recommended. What’s the opinion of those with considerable experience?

Currently I use the EasyBite indicator on all my jig rods. Put that on a cheapo rod and you have the most sensitive rig on the ice. It’s also really easy for aging eyes to watch all day. I’ve tried all the add-on spring bobbers and they don’t match up to the E.B., and my eyes get tired of watching thin wire all day. However, the E.B. is big and clunky – and as careful as I am, I still occasionally get water in the pivot and it freezes up on me.

The other option is the high end St Croix rod. But again, I prefer not to have to stare at thin wire all day.

So what say you? Will the Power Noodle work as well as the E.B. with heavier tungsten? I’d hate to spend $80 on a high-end rod only to still like the old cheapos better.

Did you watch last weekend IDO show. James looked to be fishing heavy Tungsten on light rods for crappies. You can see how the jigs worked on that light tipped rod in the video.

Give TB’s a call and ask to talk to the rod builder and see what they have to say. I even got to go up stairs and see how they build them when I ordered my panfish sweetheart.

I second that about checking out the last IDO-show fishing with tungsten. I love the TUC Pnoodle rod for that exact purpose, fishing crappies and panfish. I think there alot of good rods out there, however the TUC Precision Noodle righ now takes the cake for me, unbelieveable sensitivity along with a good quick backbone. I would take the money and get a couple of the TUC noodle rods and have Ryan, Adam and John build exactly what you want with the recoil guides. I was checking out numerous rods until I picked up the TUC noodle and the rest is history. I have since infected numerous buddies and family with these rods! Thorne has a great product too, however I have not had them build me one.

Good luck, at least your doing yourself the right thing and getting some quality gear! I like to hear about “fishing funds” being used wisely!!

I see your in chippewa, feel free to stop into Skeeter Boat Center and handle a few of the tuned up rods. We have a great variety here and also have some that are set up ready to go so you can get a good feel of what they would fish like with the tungsten jigs!!!

If you are still open on rods, maybe take a look at the tuned up custom precision noodle. It works great with tungsten up to 5mm. You can see it being used on the IDO crappie show that aired yesterday. IMO a more sensitive rod than the power noodle.

JW I run a 28″ Power Noodle from TB and almost always use a 4mm Fiska with plastic whether I’m fishing 15 fow or 35 fow.
I like it better than my Quiver Stick. If your a tip watcher
it’s definitely what your looking for. I’ve heard great things about the TUC rods for sure though. Good Luck in your search.

Our normal store hours are Monday through Friday 8 to 5. Someone is usually around later than that though. If those hours don’t work for you give us a little heads up when you may be coming through and we can work something out

I have a 28 inch powernoodle and I currently have a 4mm fiska tied on and have no issues detecting bites.
