Everyone says that the slender spoons are the cats pigamas for walleye. I tried different colors and sizes. No luck. I tried them everytime I go. I get lookers but no takers. It’s weird

when they don’t take the slender spoons, i switch to either buckshot spoons so i can rattle them in, or to a small tungsten. sometimes going smaller is alot better.

I couldn’t get them to hit Slenders (with and without heads) this weekend either but then switched over to 1/32 oz bloodworm type jigs and things worked out. Two weekends ago, albeit on different water, they were slamming the SS.

Are you ripping them to give them the chance to free fall and flutter back down? If not, try it. Fish it very agressive.

A lot of times i rip the minnow head off when im jigging, just to put it into perspective of how i fish it. And yes, i have great success with it!

Yea the said thing is that I tried it on different days and nothing. Not even a nibble. Weird. I guess walleye in Colorado don’t like that. Cuz I switched to a red lindy spoon and they were going after them.

Its important to remember that although they may be a great lure, they are just like any other lure. Sometimes the fish will go on them and sometimes they wont. Sometimes the fish will go on almost anything, too. Switch it up if a certain lure doesn’t yield anything after 10 minutes and you see movement on your flasher… if you don’t it’s kinda like drilling one hole and and not moving.

Fish have no idea that slender spoons are the hot bait right now. They don’t flock to every slender spoon that is dropped down the hole. In experienced hands with a person who is good at finding fish they can be a great tool. If you’re not catching fish on them then its likely not your bait but where/when you are fishing and how good you are with the bait you have tied on.

I laugh when people ask me what I was using and nothing about where i was. It doesn’t really matter if you’re not on active fish.

I have had the same luck at times. I have a second rod rigged up with a moxi live forage from northland tied on. If I see that they aren’t responding to one or the other I just switch up. I also have had luck using a drop hook tipped with a minnow head 3-4 inches under a Kastmaster for the biters that are just not sure they want to bite

X2.. the spoon must be fished aggressively. If you have passive fish it wont work. Its the fluttering free fall that catches the attention of the fish and most of time is what brings them up to trigger the bite.

There really isn’t a magic answer to explain why or why not some people have success on a certain lure and others can’t seem to duplicate that success. I have been on certain trips where one guy is catching fish left and right but no one else can buy a fish even using the same lure and what it typically comes down to is that the person catching fish is using the lure in a slightly different way. I will say that for me slender spoons are my go to lure for targeting less agressive fish because they have a slower fluttering drop rate. But there are certain days where no matter what you throw at them they just won’t bite

Another possible explaination could be your forage base. I my experience on Mille Lacs if the fish you’re after are chasing thin flat baitfish, like shiners or even small tullibees, a slender spoon seems to be bar none the best option. However, it could be that because of the forage base in the areas you’re fishing that they’re just looking for something different

I have to agree with this statement. There are tons of baits out on the market, none of which is a one-size-fits-all type of lure. Everything has its day and place.

Grant mentions the rip-jigging, probably a technique not too common with lots people. Sonars, Jigging Raps, even the common jighhead/plastic combo commonly used in open water but used under the ice can improve in productivity when fished this way.

Still, too many people want that do-all bait. It doesn’t exist. We can fish two lines, drop a minnowon the dead stick down a hole drilled close to another and put the flash bait down the second hole. Fish coming to, but not hitting, the flash bait may be turned to the soaking minnow.

it all has been said earlier, but if your not marking fish chances are slim you will get any lure to work. If you are marking fish and they are not reacting at all, try the plain red hook with a lively minnow or a couple waxies, some times less is more. I use a faster lure to explore, if I raise a few red lines and don’t get bit, I will then move to the slender spoon or live bait. Usually the kastmaster does the trick though. If I mark nothing with a kastmaster I move.

Does anybody on the eastern side of the TC know who may have some spoons in stock? Checked Maplewood Fleet Farm last night and if they had them, there is no sign of any left. Heading to the pond this weekend and want to give them a shot. PMs welcome.

Joes may still have some in stock. Otherwise depending on which way you travel to Mille Lacs, several bait shops on the way up. Prince bait in Milaca or Lundeens in Onamia should have some.

    I was at Joe’s yesterday.

They were a little low but said they were getting more in any day.

Hottest lure on the ice, they said.

Good call Randy. You ever put the 1/16 under a float and just shake the float? It drives the gills nuts pre spawn!

No, but I know it would work. I was using pulse-r’s under a float just before freeze up and hammering eyes on a couple shallow basin lakes

I bought 3 different ones at Vados last night. They had all 4 sizes and at least 3 different colors of each. I bought 2 5/16 and one 1/8. Gonna try them on LOTW this weekend and figured heavier would be better for fishing ‘eyes in the mud flats.
