Fun Change of Pace

I was looking for bull gills, but ended up finding some hyper aggressive perch. This is a metro area lake. Nothing huge, but a fun change of pace from the passive, deliberate bluegills I have been chasing. Most holes they literally would hit the spoon as soon as it settled after lowering it or they hit it on the way down. It was a lot of fun watching those blips on the showdown race to meet the spoon.

X2…Cool photos! Those are pretty decent size as well for the metro.

Thanks. It was fun to take the camera out again. I am ashamed to say I have been lazy on that front for a while.

I did make the mistake of packing up and heading to another lake after about 2.5 hours. I am kicking myself now. I figured the other lake would be kicking up small panfish and some little pike to end the day. It was dead. It would have been worth staying and seeing if I could get another run on the tip up, because I missed one out there that seemed pretty solid. I am sure in the very least it was twice the size of anything in the other lake, not that that is saying much.

I’ll certainly return to this lake in the future.

On the other hand I am kind of glad I left. I heard a car went through on tonka. The lake I was on had about 12″. Not exactly reassuring to me. I prefer about 16″.

Would you believe a 6 megapixel Canon Sureshot from a couple generations ago?

All the digital cameras I have used have had awesome Macro features. I actually sometimes use a 5MP Olympus that has to be close to 10 years old just for macros. That way I can have the Canon set for normal pictures on the tripod set up to take multi shots on a timer.

Its hard taking a bad photo on a bright sunny day outdoors. But I did. I noticed after my first couple shots that it was on the indoor incandescent light setting.

To fix that I used Photoscape which is a free PC program. It has awesome preset filters you can play around with that make color correcting and or adding dramatic effects a breeze.

Before I put the below together, I thought the differences would be more dramatic. I believe both of these were accidentally taken with the indoor settings. I may have to remember this the next time out. That settings color may be off, but its cool how the ice has a blue cast even after doing some color correcting.

My favorite preset effect is “Bloom” which gives a photo a dreamy quality.

So there is my case for Photoscape. Its a powerful free photo editor.

I don’t have delusions of being an expert. My only advice is keep the sun at the cameras back (subject facing the sun), check for shadows being cast from the photographer/tripod camera and try interesting perspectives, never shoot straight on. I suppose I could add, make sure you aren’t cutting off the fishes tail. Employing the rule of 3rds doesn’t hurt either.

If I remember those few things, I am usually happy when I review my pictures after a trip. If you are looking for advanced instructs, I got nothing.

About 10 minutes closer to my house.

Wish I could have released this one. I kept her in a 5 gallon pail of water with the hopes of releasing her if I got no more. She ended up being a floater. Caught a few more, but they were nothing exceptional.
