I was planning on fishing a lake where gas boat motors are not allowed. I was wandering if gas augers are??? Is there anyone that knows the laws on this restriction? any help is appreciated!

Im pretty sure you are fine using a gas auger. I use one all the time at a lake that doesnt allow gas motors in the summer.

I have personally never seen an instance where augers were not allowed on a no-motor lake.

You can’t use gas augers in the BWCA, which don’t allow gas engines. I am not sure about lakes outside the BWCA. I would be certain before you give it a shot.

The reason gas motors are not allowed is because they output exhaust and oil residue into the water. An auger shoots its exhaust into the air. As long as you are not in a no gas motor area, where ATVs, snowmobiles, and the such are also not allowed then you are fine.

If you are fishing a no gas motor lake, then it is ran by somebody… either the DNR or a Park. Call up whoever owns it and ask.

There used to be a lake in western minnesota, that was listed as “primative fishing” only. no gas motors, no electronics, no gas augars, and very limited catch and keep regs.
if your lake as such a reg, then it would be listed in the “special reg” section of the mn dnr regs.
you can also call the dnr office for your region.

I’d check with the local office too. I know some areas that are outside of the BWCA that are hand auger only, especially if it is withing a Sate or National designated area.

Not allowed in BWCA – we used to ice fish, winter camp Lake Trout.

    Sorry

You will get plenty of work drilling holes in 3 feet of ice. Lactic Acid is a fun thing to deal with at -20. I would leave the 10 and 8 inch augers at home – buy a 6 inch.

Also, you may need an extension if you are going in March.

Do you need to use willow sticks for poles and grape vine for line?
