James, I really enjoyed last week’s tip up show. I have a question on the quick strike rigs with the Sure -Set trebles. Do you hook the bait on the elongated hook or leave that free ? Thanks Keep up the great shows. I think you put the others to shame.

    The short answer is yes.

The more detailed answer is that we actually were also taking advantage of the extra wide hook gap to hook the minnows in a unique way that resulted in a higher percentage of hook ups. By inserting the hooks parallel to the dorsal fin starting from the front forward of the fin and from the back behind the fin it puts the other hooks in perfect position to hook the fish right under their top lip or in the side of the mouth. Does that explaination make sense?

It confuses me, James. Which way are the long hooks that you hook the sucker with pointed? Is the front hook pointed towards the head and the rear hook pointed towards the tail? Please elaborate. I love your show and really want to use this technique. And, when you use shiners with a single hook, which way is the hook pointed? Thanks!
I’ve never used tip ups before.

I had a very hard time finding the hooks from any retailer in the southern metro. I ended up ordering them online through Rapala’s web site. I am rethinking my whole use of tip up strategy because of the show. Now I hope I can rig the set up well??? That was a great show
