I know there are a ton of posts already on this, but I have 2 questions. Is it too heavy for panfish and can the handle be swapped to be on the right side so you reel with the right hand?

As much as I want one I am not going to pay $100 for an ice reel.

No, it is not too heavy for panfish. Yes, you can switch it to a right hand retrieve. 13 fishing has some you tube videos of how to do it. Or you can mail it in to them and they will do it for free when I spoke to Matt at the St. Paul Ice Show.

I understand what you are saying. Apparently some people don’t think $99 is out of line because people are buying them on ebay for up to $185 each.

I understand as well, but I got money for my birthday with strict instructions to use it to by the EC multiplier that is out of stock that I wanted. So I basically could get this for a Eagle Claw multiplier price.

The 6061 is a much better reel than the EC and IMO worth the pricetag… I have one in the mail as I type since ,y first one has been so nice to use…It will be replacing a spinning reel for deep water perch jigging…

For those of you that have been able to fish with these reels, can you fish with them specifically for walleyes? I’ve seen a bunch of people use them for panfish but haven’t seen anything for walleyes. Thanks! I’m on the fence with these reels and about to press checkout!

Also, how are you guys setting up these reels? All mono? flouro? Braid with leaders?

Not sure why, but Reeds are selling 6061’s via auction on eBay. Even though their website says they are out. Not sure how I feel about that.

I caught 4 walleyes with one the other weekend. Nothing over 15 inches and I didn’t use the drag. But I like it a lot.

Do you guys believe the reel is worth the pricetag? Or should I hold off until next year? Ice season is practically half way over with. On the other hand…my birthday is right around the corner

I have one and not a big fan of it…I am used to spinning reels, that is what reach for first. The free spool is not the “cats meeeeoooow ” like everyone says it is,very touchy,VERY!.I can get my lure down faster with my Abu.As far as line twists go,I can get it straight in a matter of seconds… Just my opinion and yes,I am VERY opinianated about my fishing gear!!!
So,I will give it another try tomorrow, maybe… Paul

Back the spool tension all the way off mine will fall as fast or faster than most my spinning combos… I do think they are the cats meow and the one reel it will be replacing is an Abu….

I wonder if, since they are a retailer, if selling them on eBay is in any way against any retail agreement they may have with the company. It is a free market, but I don’t expect a store to sell things at auction. Buy It Now, maybe, but not on auction.

Anybody who thinks he needs a $100 reel to pan fish, I’ve got a bridge I’d like to sell you.

My open water reel was almost $100 why not for ice? I have many $200-$500 reels for open water, when you use something alot to the point of abuse and beyond you buy the best…To me the 6061 is well worth it or I would not have bought a 2nd one… Do I “need it” maybe not but can have it so do…

    Where is it located?

I wouldn’t spend $100 either, in fact that is why I wasn’t going to buy one. But at $50 it is very tempting.

I would wait on it for this year… EC has a newer version of the multiplier in the works that will be out next year. But you didn’t hear that fom me…

6061 is 3x the reel the EC is, guessing we will see several companies making this type of reel next year and those already out improving theirs….

Do you guys see any changes and/or improvements made to the current 6061 next ice season? Would be crappy if I bought one this year only to be one uped next year with new improvements made to it. Thanks

Maybe drag improvement about all I see with them…My guess is you will see a carbon verion or something lower priced for those reluctent to spend $100

I’ve also been reading that it is fairly difficult to hold a rod in the pistol or pencil grip with this reel because of your glove rubbing/interfering with the spool. I’d like to see a change to the reel to allow for this to happen

I dont see the challenge there, I pencil grip but rare I ever wear gloves when fishing….
