A month ago I had no plans on getting out ice fishing more than 3-4 times the entire season, but after going through my gear and getting a nice auger from my dad for xmas I officially am back to hard core ice fishing. I have been out about 15 times so far and don’t see that slowing down, but I couldn’t deal with my old Zercom flasher (probably the original one made) but I really didn’t want to drop 500. bucks on a new one. After looking around I decided to go with the basic Marcum VX1 and after about 7 hours using it I am very pleased with the $249. price tag! I also bought a Frabill 24″ straight line and some tungsten jigs… AWESOME!! I can not wait to get out in the morning!!!

Anyone having any goodluck around the metro picking up some nice crappies? I have fished Demontreville, and the st.Croix mostly and I am getting bored with the little sunnys. Any tips help, Thanks

Good looking rig you have there.

Want to know something funny? I had that same exact zercom flasher, and have since upgraded to a vx-1p also. IMO the vx-1p is an awesome unit.

LOL, still have a zercom clear water classic, still works, but don’t think I’ll give up my LX5 or LX6.

Yeah that damn zercom just wont go away lol. It is missing buttons, it fell off of my trunk 2 years ago and after a weekend of fishing I came home to find it in a snowbank and had been pushed there by the plow!

Sorry to hear that DeMontreville isn’t producing any Crappies. I was thinking about heading out after work this week. Looks like I need a new plan.

I picked up one of those Eskimos a couple of weeks ago because I couldn’t get my Yukon out of my vehicle. (long story)

What a great shack for the $$. I haven’t used my Clam since I made the emergency purchase.

The vx1 is a solid unit for the price. Kind of like a nice truck without the power windows and bucket seats but with the solid return and IR option it gets you there in comfort Seems like this year more and more people are becoming addicted to ice time…. Good luck

Nice selection of gear! On a side note, You might not want to store your power ice auger in the ice,it can bend the auger…

Really? Even if you run it down till it is “tight” in the hole I usually only do that when I am gonna be drilling more holes soon because otherwise my blades get a coating of ice on them and I have to chip it off to drill more. BUT I will no longer be doing it this way!! Thanks!!

I’m still scouting for some decent metro bluegills. I was very disappointed to find at least a dozen people on a lake I tried Saturday that is tiny. It was a nice lake not too long ago until the word got out. Time to keep scouting.

I was up on Sturgeon Lake years ago. The group next to us drilled a partial hole to stand their auger in. And they drilled down just a little too deep. The hole slowly filled with water and froze the bottom of the auger in solid. They had to chip it out of there with a spud. The results were not pretty.

LOL I have seen that also!

I will admit that when there is a lot of snow on the ice, I drill a half hole to stand the auger up in so the snow stays off the handle. Hand auger of course, I would not risk it with a power auger.
