Ice line question

Hey guys. I used the Suffix mono hi vis orange line for the first time at LOTW last week. I was in a permanent, so no issues with line freezing etc. But I did notice that compared to the Bionic mono I was using the suffix seemed to coil much more/have a lot more memory etc. Maybe just me. In terms of reducing this, would florocarbon work any better? If so, any suggestions? I’ve seen both the floro coated line, as well as the 100 percent fluro.

I use Trilene 100% Flurocarbon Ice line clear and I just ordered two Eagle Claw Inline Reels (like fly reels) because even though it is basically invisible in the water, it is notorious for coiling & twisting with small spools. Don’t know if this helps or not, but I thought I would mention what my setup consists of.

P-line floroclear in 4lb is what I use. Straight fluorocarbon coils like crazy!

Was the sufix and bionic the same test? I know that coiling is more evident in higher test lines.

I primarily use sufix 4lb for all my deadstick rods, the 6lb has a much more noticeable coil to it whenever I’ve tried it.

They were both 6 lb test. Bionic still coiled a bit, but not nearly as bad as the Suffix did.

See if you can find a spool of Vanish, clear, in 4 pound. This is my cold weather line of choice and is on all of my reels used for winter fishing ice or not. Vanish in weights of 6 pounds or more will be a handful. 4 pound Vanish is tough stuff.

If you have memory or coiling issues on the ice, walk off 50 feet of line without a lure on the end and re-reel it pinching it hard between a thumb and index finger. If you, find a 3″ X 3″ piece of soft leather to pinch the line when doing this…works miracles.

Great tips. Thanks, Tom. You use 4 lb for walleye?

I won’t speak for Tom but I’ve never found a reason to use anything heavier than 4lb for walleyes while ice fishing. I’ve landed a bunch of walleyes north of 8lbs on 4 pound line and haven’t been broke off yet.

Never used the orange hi vis, but I can tell you that my results with the same pound test were the exact opposite, esp. after each line had been on the spool for some time. The sufix stayed supple and remained a great line to fish with for months, and not so much for the Bionic.

2lb Vanish for pannies, 4lb Vanish for walleyes. Add a small barrel swivel a couple feet up and you are good to go.

I tried Sufix HiV orange 6# on a reel for the March P4 pitching 2 years ago and the line did not even stay on the reel for the day… Memory city, I even tried conditioner.

I love vanish in the summer so I tried 6# last week on LOW in a perm shack on a dead stick rod and it was horrible of memory, have not used Vanish 4# in winter nor will I try it after seeing 6# do what it did.

P-line floroclear 4# was good as was 4# Sensation.

I have used the Hi Viz sufix for years with next to zero memory issues. How are you guys putting the line on? For spinning reels it is always best to have it done by machine. Putting it on by hand and letting the spool lay on the floor is a bad way to spool line. The line needs to go on the reel exactly how it comes off the filler/pony spool to limit memory issues.

I wonder if that’s the issue here. I could be just putting the line on poorly or something. Cuz despite others good experience with 6lb Suffix, mine was pretty bad. So do you just take your reels in to Fleet Farm or Gander or wherever to do that? Gander I think usually charges for that here in Rochester. Can’t recall if FFarm does. I assume it depends on if you buy the line from them.

I use the Suffix hivis Orange 6# and love it, the line stays fairly limber and minimal line twist.

with vanish you have to put a few wraps on and then give it some slack. If it coils down by the spool up flip the spool over and complete your fill on your reel.

If you are looking for a high vis line for Panfish I use both 2lb Cortland yellow and Stren high vis gold lines with excellent results. Both are mono’s with exceptional durability and low memory. For clear line I am very partial to Northland’s Flurosilk which is a “flurocarbon coated” line, not exactly sure what that specifically means but I do know I love it great memory and knot strength for a 2lb ice line.

When ice fishing panfish, use the lightest line possible, I use 2 lb test… tried many different types haven’t found a go to line yet. But what helps is using an inline reel, this will make your line last forever! Thin line on a spinning reel is a headache after a bit, I fish a lot and found that out in a hurry. Since I switched to inline reels last year, the headache vanished

I just picked up a spool of 4# vicious 100% fluorocarbon lo-vis clear, I got it very cheap but know nothing about the stuff = any input or should I give it to the kid.

What’s the advantage to hi vis line vs clear in a panfishing situation? Would you use a clear mono leader with it?

I personally have never found the need to use a leader with my high vis lines, check your pm as well, I elaborated more on the pros and cons.
