Caught my personal best gill last week in an Iowa farm pond. Made my heart skip a beat when it wrapped my line around the transducer. We didn’t have any snow on the ice and it looked like a hub cap coming up through the ice. It went 11.25″ and weighed in at 1.4 lbs. If it was on public waters I would have released it but this pond has a lot of 9 and 10 inters and they are creeping up there this season.

    Beautiful gill

I can only imagine what they look like in their Spring spawning colors.

Awesome Gill! That is a tough old fish to trick into biting.

I hear yellow coloration below the gill flap means female and in this case males are more important as they guard the nest. Solid choice in keeping, as you are aware of the population dynamics of the private pond and aren’t just keeping away.

    Awesome fish Travis!
Great pictures as well. The photographer did a great job of capturing its true size without losing perspective with everything else.

Thanks everyone, it was a thrill. I fish nothing but plastics, this being my second year of it. I’ve seen my catch rates go up and the size of the fish has improved. I feel that any day I can catch the better fish with plastics…..well, tip downs might be better when the jig just isn’t doing it. I’m back at it tomorrow.
