Do you ever notice how much garbage is left on the ice? Seems like it gets to be more and more every year.If you see some garbage on the ice please go out of your way and pick up a couple of pieces on your way. Iam convinced that more and more stupid people are surrounding us every day.Our lakes deserve better.

About ten years ago I went to fish a local pond and found the tray bottom of a portable froze down to the ice with about 2 inches of ice inside. They broke the poles off and took the tent. They also forgot a large Cabela’s bag with a couple hundred bucks worth of new tackle, most not even out of the package. I called it pay for chipping the bottom out and leaving at a trash container in the parking lot.

But yes, trash is a super problem. Lots of slob anglers out in this world.

Do you guys just tie off a garbage bag in your portable or does someone out there have the perfect trash container for on the ice?

Thanks for the post. Trash disgusts me.

I don’t use a container, I just toss everything in the bottom portable’s sled and clean it out when I get home.

That Jagermeister bottle wasn’t trash, or were you just letting the last shot chill for the walk back?

I used to carry a trash bag with me, anymore I just toss it in the bucket, sled, or portable until I get home and dump it then. Still keep garbage bags in the boat-the beauty of the rivers and streams is half or more the reason I do this; God knows it’s not because I’m catching a ton of fish!
Pick up after yourselves…I always figured if you had the energy to haul it out there you ought to be able to haul it back.
Thanks to all the folks out there who DO pick up after the slobs, by the way–that’s why you earn the name “sportsman”.

I couldn’t imagine someone abusing alcohol like that. I knew it wasn’t trash, that was some teenagers refrigerator.

What really strikes me is that some lakes I fish get even more use in the summer. I look at the amount of crap on the ice and assume it’s worse during open water season, which is even sadder.

I mean we all make mistakes, I’ve lost wrappers across the ice I was too lazy to chase. But that pile of a dozen cig butts- even when I smoked I had a compartment in my tackle box for that crap. Bait containers…. really people?

A couple things we can all do to help.

    1) When you see a lot of trash outside an icehouse take a couple photo’s with your smart-phone with GPS enabled, make sure one shows name & license of icehouse. Send these to the DNR TIP line.

    2) If you’re fishing nearby, watch the icehouse for illegal activity. Many of these SLOBS are NOT fishermen/Sportsmen but the Ice-houses become a great place for criminal activity. METH making Operations, Drug Trading, a Place for Underage Drinking Parties, etc. If you suspect illegal Activity, please call 911, tell dispatcher right it is a Non-Emergency Call (if not Emergency) then give them the information so they can send Sheriff, Water Patrol or Conservation Officers to check it out. Again provide some photo’s with GPS Coordinates if you can.

Anything we can do to help our Law Enforcement Officials benefits all of us. Photo’s with GPS Enabled gives them evidence they may need to prosecute a case. Even if you come upon a site where the people have left, but left quite a bit of trash on the Ice, a Photo with GPS Coordinates may help as some C.O.’s photograph Ice-house’s with GPS Coordinates and showing Ice-house license and name for future use, especially if they may suspect these people will leave the trash, etc.

Personally, I hate spring fishing and finding endless amounts of garbage floating around. Makes Fishermen look bad and make damage your boat or other gear. I’ll net the garbage and take to dumpster at landing or just along home to keep our lakes clean.

Carrol 58, it might help to try and see if you could talk to the dirtbags first. Sometimes people just don’t know how bad they are and look. Bringing in the Law officers should be used only if they do not listen to the concerned citizen.

Thats what we do in the country anyway.
