I like them both ways, honestly havent found one to outfish the other. It’s all about confidence in your lures though, so if it doesnt look right to you then switch them up!
IMO (talking spoons for crappies and bass)
If I am fishing it without bait, I’m looking for the fish that are HUNGRY. They usually come right up and smack it hard. I don’t think they even know what it is, just that jigging motion makes them eat it. For this I don’t think a detailed paint job matters much, let alone where the eye is.
If I am fishing them with bait the fish are keying in on the minnow head or spikes as the bait falls. They are looking right at that meat and could care less what it looks like.
I think purty paint jobs are just to hook fisherman. I don’t think it matters one bit where the eye is, or if it even has one. Fish are seeing movement, think it is food and eat it.
