Safe ice on rivers and moving water ways?

So I want to put in some work to get to a fishing spot that is off the map system. Problem is there is no public or walk in access. There is a connection point from the main lake to where I want to go fishing. Looking over Google maps clearly shows it but I have some concerns. I certainly am not going to trespass to get there so the waterway is my plan of attack. Lots of timber and cattails are included in this mix since the watershed is low. Should I be concerned with thin ice and breaking through? I have never attempted to fish this area before so I have no idea what to expect with obstructions or even how fast the water is moving if at all. I do see two culverts on the map and possibly a dam. This is in the metro area and I know the ice in the main lake is anywhere from 4-8 inches as of today. Anyone with experience in this situation, I would love to hear some feedback. Thanks! Not looking to go waste deep on this trip!

The thing with current is that in one spot you can have 6 inches of solid clear ice, but you step two feet over and put your foot through an inch of ice where the current necks down or wells up. It pays to know a bit about the water in terms of current, springs, and other things that vary the ice thickness, but the bottom line is you have to be careful. Current, especially in areas you may not know very well can make the ice very inconsistent. This doesn’t mean it won’t form, it just makes a lot of thin spots, areas of open water, etc. Carry a spud to test the ice in front of you and get a pair of ice picks in case you go through. Good luck and be safe out there.

That is plan B. There are two but they both have a pretty thick wooded buffer from the lots to the pond. No house actually on the “lake”

I have some experience with this…. I got wet waist deep… it wasn’t the current but the cat tails the decay of the cat tails in this back water system i was trying to cross made the ice super thin. the main lake had almost a foot of ice and when i fell in there was only and inch and a half… it was 10 degrees and I froze my *** off walking two miles back to my car. wasn’t fun. however I know how tempting it may be to get there and taking the waterway. I would definitely knock on some doors before trying to walk there on the water . ice pick saved me so I strongly suggest them.

What happened to you is what I fear. Not a good time what so ever. Should I door knock with a bible or without? I do not want to get shot, but then again coming in Jesus’s name may be bad also ahaha
