Dollars for Target Separation … what does it buy

For fishing walleye, if target separation was the only buying factor, is spending more for a flasher with smaller target separation worth the extra dollars. If yes, please explain why.

    Looking at Marcums: VX7 0.5″, VX5&6 0.75″, VX3 1.5″, VX1P 2.15″

If my only option was to fish a flat loaded with bottom hugging smallish walleye, I’d be willing to pay at least $100/.25″, possibly more depending on how long since my last meal.

The middle of the road is just fine anything more just over kill, maybe not over kill but just not needed, anything less you might have a hard time seeing the jig under certain circumstances. IMHO.

    Its like this.

When a new hot jig comes out early in the year everyone wants it by the end of the year the jigging rapula still gets a lot of use over that new jig.

Target separation could be the difference between getting skunked and coming home with a limit.Go with the best target separation you can afford.

The reason I asked this question is I’m new to ice fishing. Just trying to understand the angler/physics here. For example, what is it about a 0.75″ target separation of a VX5 or VX6 that would enable you to catch more walleye than the 1.5″ target separation of a VX3?

I think the showdown has 3/4″ separation and its a little cheaper option.

keep in mind that on the best days, it doesn’t matter. Fish are aggressiveand will move throughout the column and rise for a bait. It’sthe nutetral days that really calls for it. As negative fish slowly move across a flat with there belly to the bottom, could move through undetected.Also. having fish within the cone of your transducer,: you may not be able to see your jig or spoon with a lessor amount of seperation.
