Going home around the first of the year. I’ve been wanting to get out on small lake in the area for years now and fish for some big lakers and splake. the lake is bowl shaped with some points and steep drop offs i fished it this summer and hammered some nice smallies and one nice trout. the lake is only 25 acres but i have no idea what the patterns are for lakers and splake in the winter where should i start out and what should i use. The lake is in the middle of no where and not alot of guys fish it so its tough to try and get any type of report. I just watched the ice episode of james and scott from a ways back and it just got me thinking where i should start out. the lake has alot of structure on the shorline like fallen trees in 20 ft of water but i just don’t know how much these fish may or may not concentrate on these structures. We marked them in 65 fow in the summer and i mean gobs of them. so im thinking about starting deeper. Any thoughts guys?

Not a trout expert, but from my summer experiences in Canada, they tend to cruise shore lines and slow up a little around points or steeper shelfs/breaks. They don’t seem to hold on a structure like other species of fish but rather keep moving. And generally stay schooled together. On a lake that small I would set up and keep noise to a minimum. They like cut suckers on jigs or white colored jigs and plastics. Even saw a youtube vid of someone using a big white bucktail jig. Maybe even try a tipup w/a piece of cut sucker on it. Good luck!
