Looking for a cheaper way to rig my tip-ups for pike. I’ve been using the terminator leaders at $ 16 a pop and I’ve been looking for an alternative I’ve seen a lot of guys switching to heavy braids or fluorocarbons what are the pro’s and cons and what lb test will work for eliminating bite offs for pig pike on a tip-up. The titanium never breaks and i’m happy about that but its pricey and that im not happy about.

…The plain old “steel leader” will work just fine on tip ups. Big Pike will not “Spook” from a steel leader and no bite offs.! ..Trust Me.And they are cheap…rrr

Yeah I know the steel leaders work but it seems after two or three fish they just curl up…I know Pike are super aggressive but if my minnow is dead because it cannot swim my presentation suffers… anyone tried the heavy fluoro for tip-ups. I do a lot of walleye fishing as well and the titanium leaders i have now do the trick for the picky fish. thanks for the post i’ve used the steel leaders in the past and i don’t really want to go back to them. any tips boys

Get yourself some 30 or 40lb seaguar fluorocarbon leader materia. Then uniknot it to your main line. That’s the same setup I use for my tipups and on my pike rod. I haven’t had any issues with bite offs yet.

The 30 and 40lb is still pretty flexible and I don’t coil my leaders so memory isn’t something I notice much. I start with a 3ft leader and trim it back as it gets beat up. Learn to tie the uniknot and that way you can eliminate swivels and snaps and take full advantage of the fluorocarbon line!

Oh i know the uni knot I’ve been using it to make leaders with braid in the summer for Texas rigging bass. the pike can’t seem to leave the soft plastics alone. thanks for the info ill have to check out which fluoro to buy now

Buy the seaguar brand leader material! Best I’ve found. It comes in like 25yard spools. Stay away from berkley flouro!!

I use regular 6 pound mono on my walleye tip ups and catch quite a few pike. It might be all about the hookset, but I rarely have break offs. I just give a steady pull as my hookset and let ’em have line if they want it.

i run 15lb fluoro leaders on my tip-ups when fishing lakes wih alot of pike and have landed pike up to 36 inches in the past couple years and have had no bite offs. Going to a heavier fluoro would seem to be a good choice to me.

But when i do target strickly pike i just use steel leaders when they curl up i toss,em
