The GF and I are looking at taking a road trip the end of January for 4-5 days of relaxation and icefishing. We do not need fancy but something comfortable with decent fishing and access to good food and drinks nearby would be perfect.

We have a couple of ideas but always appreciate suggestions. We do have a snowmobile for transportation if needed and all the other gear, 2 man flip over, auger, etc.

    We have these so far.

    1. Duluth and fish the River or ??????

    2. Pool 8 and fish the Stoddard Islands area.

    3. Northern MN. ????????

    4. South Dakota Waubay Area.

Rainy Lake, Lake of the Woods, Devils Lake, or South Dakota. I don’t think you could go wrong with any of them. I think I would go Rainy Lake multi species and very beautiful up there.

I’d add Devis Lake to that list.

Thunderbird on Rainy. All of the above and then some.

Depends if you want variety or just want to fish Walleyes…

If it is walleyes you seek it doesn’t get much better than Lake of the Woods, several resorts offer comfortable cabins/rooms or get a sleeper house for your trip.

If you are looking at variety or fish, I would consider Rainy Lake, Leech Lake, Lake Winnie.

Leech and Winnie area also offer numerous lakes in the area you could venture too and try your luck and multiple species of fish as well.

Either way any of those choices in Northern MN will make for a great fishing trip.

I always enjoy fishing the Gulf of Mexico out of Florida. In fact I’m in the planning stages of my next trip down

Although Florida would be nice this is an icefishing trip!! We would like to target panfish as well as the possible Walleye. I will check into Thunderbird as a possibility.

    Keep them coming!!

Thunderbird is very nice…good food and drinks with a cozy atmosphere in the bar area. Stay away from that Granrud guy though…nothing but trouble.

Would definitely recommend the Waubay trip. I was there at the end of September and the fishing was fantastic. Would love to go back and spend a week hammering the walleyes and jumbo perch. We spent the majority of our trip on Bitter though.

I’ve heard the stories about him, what do you think the chances of running into that unsavory character would be? Don’t want to take any unnecessary chances!!!!

We must of been there at the same time, we were there the end of September and fished Bitter, the Perch bite sure was on!!!! We stayed at Circle Pines in the house he has behind the Motel.

Really considering going back there, have never ice fished it but it cannot be too difficult to find the Perch and eyes.

    Trip Ideas

The below is a quote I have in the above post (links active above) part way down:

Give Rob Manthei a call at St. Germain Resort in St. Germain. Lots of little lakes in pretty good shape right now for a good first ice bite. Place to stay, great restaurant, yours truly might be bartending, lots of great places to fish in scenic Vilas County!!!

Wow, we were at Circle Pines also. Got yelled at for being loud during the packer game. Great fishing though. Going back next summer, maybe a little earlier in September.

Glad we were in the back house because we got very loud, a little Crown Royal and beers helps that happen!!! LAst year we went in October and the Walleye bite was better, not sure I would go earlier or not. I think fishing there is good most of the time.
